How much did you spend in hobby?

Do you guys ever try to figure out how much did you spent in hobbies (any kind of hobby, not only TV games) last year? Last 3 years? Last 10 years? All these years?

I only start to realize how much did I spent, when I start actively selling my stuffs for money due to recent economical down turn. In the past I use most of my money received from my old stuffs' sale to fund my new stuffs; and I didn't keep track of how much money had been spent that way.

From Oct last year till now, sale of my old stuffs accounts for an income of USD 10,000+ ?!?!

And I am only halfway though my stuffs. Costly shmups like BorderDown, Ikaruga, Zanic X Zanic, Image Flight & X-Mutiply, etc. are still sitting on the shelf.

I start to wonder how much did I actually spent in acquiring these stuffs? How much did I spent in my hoddy all these years? What if I invested some of these money (like in Cave PCBs for example) instead of just spending them all for joy and amusement? How much richer would I be?

I am not saying that we shouldn't spend money in hobby, it's just most of us might not be realized how much did we spend.

Not until you actually see the numbers, did you found out that you actually didn't want to spend so much. One thing is clear, I definately was spending too much.

I have a couple thousand dollars worth of tools selected to be semi-safe to use while nodding out. Shouldn't bleed out or amputate something.

My attention span is not what an adult ought to have. So I tinker with it. Elves come finish the li'l jobs.

err I had about 3000 GBP worth at the very least of DJ equipment over the years. Ive made that back in bookings though.

i've spend a few euros for pens, and always steal papers from everywhere.
So, its actually the effort that should be mentioned here, not the money.

I have a long history of expensive hobbies. I don't even want to think about an exact figure, but I know we are talking about tens of thousands of (US) dollars.

The most expensive hobby I have dabbled in to date has been racing cars. It was so expensive in fact, that I quit. At least until I get super smokin' rich.

I've got to have spent 5000+ GBP on snowbaording equipment and holidays since I took that up. Expensive hobby, escpecialy since you only get to enjoy it for a few weeks a year if you're not fortunate enough to live somewhere mountainous and snowy.

at least $10,000 over the course of 10 years on music equipment. And thats not even counting all the vinyl I have amassed since. Thats prolly another $2000 right there. The funny thing is, looking back, I can't even fathom how I was able to have all that money and not have done something that would have made me a return on my investment. Hindsight really is 20/20 I guess.

petrol for the 928 ?

i used to race motorbikes.. dunno exactly what i spent on it but its certainly a good $10K a year in just starting fees, tires, petrol, brakes and other shit you never calculate beforehand, proboably spent double that on fixing the bike each time after crashing out too

I have no idea how much I've spent overall on my hobbies, but I have to imagine they aren't cheap. I figure I probably spend at least a few hundred bucks a year on gaming, possibly more when new systems come out. A good chunk of what used to be my disposable income seems to be going into the car I bought new a year ago (which I'm trying to get paid off as quickly as possible,) so that's cut down my spending on that stuff to some extent.

I have thousands invested in DJ and music equipment. I've played enough DDR that if I had just saved up for a machine instead of playing at the arcade it probably would have equaled out by now. I've got about 100 arcade boards... the least I've ever spent on one is $7 and the most is $1,000. My Egret II was $1,200. I don't even want to think about how much I've spent on drugs in the past

I've put way too much money into gaming for me to comfortably think about as a complete sum. It's easier to justify it to myself if I only consider each $30-50 game purchase or occasional $250 console purchase as a stand-alone payment rather than adding it all together. Seeing exactly how much money I've put into hobbies would probably be really depressing.

I don't want to know. I guess it doesn't really matter as long as I'm not in debt, still putting money away for retirement, and have enough money for the lady and I to eat (which is where I'm at right now).

what is truly scary is to estimate what i must have spent on smokes over the past 15 years!!!

WAAAAAAAY more than i will probably ever spend on games/hardware/cabs

weed too.....lolz

shit...the tattoo in my avy is probably worth more than my game collection(including cab and PCB's....for a few weeks anyways....heh heh......mushi get)

If you include all my electronics from day 1 I've spent more than $250,000 in my life on stuffs.

Of course to maintain this level of expenditure i've had to under go alot of buying and selling and rebuying. Its easy to accumulate this kind of figure to be honest. I spent $2000 just buying all the neo geo pocket games and never hardly playing them. My first 5 or 6 consoles were Day 1 Japanese import consoles that cost -

US 3DO - $600
Ps1 - $1200
Ps2 - $1100
Dreamcast - $800
N64 - $1200

Thats just a handful of them as well. Then you calculate all those games I bought at the height of the PS1 import era at lets see -

Toh Shin Den $180 (yep you read right)
Tekken $140
Jumping Flash $100

I wanted everything first. If you remember my pics of my collection you will remember alot of old PS1 classics, MVS stuffs, Saturn, N64 and god knows what. Well thats just a taste of the things i've gone through. Taking up shmups didn't help, it accelerated my divorce proceedings some what.

Whats next month.

i think i've probably spent sub £5k on guitars, and sub £15k on games during the last ten years.

but at least it's stuff that is re-sellable. i wouldn't like to think what i've spent on cigs and booze over the same period

i probably spend £1k a year on junk food

which worries me much more

10K Euros is a very conservative estimate for the last 5 years.
All on gaming related stuff.

Add 5K or so on holidays and some change on other stuff.
Beer is an expensive hobby since recently....

Ah well, hobbies are what makes a life worth living!
