I still don't see how that's not a legitimate idea for a week.

Overkill has not spoken in the thread, so JoshF may begin his MS Paint banners that will kill us all.

Lol, that would be suiting for a doujin tournament, though. As in, a tournament with only doujins to play. If I play more of them this year, I'll see if it will be possible to arrange one some time later for shits'n'giggles.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't all the Touhou games being sold currently? If they are, then that pretty much rules out a Touhou week. It's one thing to download an arcade ROM for the week, but it's another to download a homebrew game that being actively sold. That would be like expecting participants to torrent or buy R-Type: Delta to take part in a gaming week, which isn't what this tournament does.

Unless it's free or MAME-able, it's not SGT material. If someone happens to own the arcade board (or an acceptable home port), that's fine. But it's not been SGT policy to expect people to run out and buy games just to be able to participate.

I didn't know they were still selling R-Type Delta.

I'm going to look into some possiblities for a doujin week.

The PSN store, any stores that sell used/new PS1 games, etc.

So how about stores that sell used/new PCBs that are in MAME? Is it fair that we played Twinbee Yahhoo last STGT and they're currently selling it as part of a PSP compilation?

I'm sorry, but this sentence seems full of hypocrisy.

There's no real justification for people who are actually downloading ROMs for MAME, because no-one has ever granted them the permission to do so, and if someone were to take legal actions on that account, "it's one thing and that's another" wouldn't cut it at all.

But I would like you to consider the possibility that if someone, ahem, gets ahold of a commercially sold game for the tournament and likes it, chances are they will actually buy the game later, ultimately bringing profit to the developer (because otherwise they wouldn't know it, wouldn't like it, and wouldn't buy it) and raising the awareness of it.

So, instead of thinking about legality issues (oh please), think about more positive things. Or, even better, help choosing the games.

I'd have a few suggestions for a doujin week. And no, none of the ones I have in mind are actually Touhou games.
My 1CCs so I can find the list easier myself

Well post them in the other stgt 08 thread kennyman. That also goes to anyone else who has ideas for Doujin games.

I'd like to be the Final Results Thread Guy if:

1.) ED-057 (or anybody else) decides not to, and
2.) It doesn't involve digging through threads to get the raw data (Scoring Week Thread Guy takes care of this, right?)

I might have some questions about how scoring works exactly but it doesn't look too complicated.

Yeah, my comment wasn't too good. I got my thoughts mixed up a bit. Sorry about that

However, while we're on the subject, allow me to try and clarify my thoughts... which don't strike me as particularly hypocritical (at least not in every sense anyway)...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but unless they're still reasonably newish, there are a lot of arcade boards that fall into the same odd area as most console games from about the N64, back... that being, they're no longer in production, or their system/board is long since dead/unsupported. This means that if you want them, you usually have get them second hand from someone/someplace because the makers stopped actively selling them to people and store chains long ago. This also means that the game makers have already gotten their money from the sale of said older game's sale to a previous owner. As such, downloading the ROM of a game like Raiden II or Progear isn't going to cut into well deserved profits. However, "Grabbing" one of the ten (or so?) Touhou games for a tournament like ours, or DOJ, is very different to me.

The people/person that made those, are still selling them, and are still getting profits from those sales. It's much the same thing with games like Raptor: Call of the Shadows and Duke Nukem 3D, with 3D Realms currently selling those games on their site. If I download Thunder Force III, no one loses a thing (for the moment). If I download the Out of This World remake for the PC, then Eric Chahi loses some of a sale. The difference is important to me.

Regarding Twin Bee Yahoo! specifically, the argument could certainly be made about the PSP collection. It would boil down to semantics, as the discussion would be about the arcade board original, versus the PSP port. However, if we'd been told to "get" the PSP collection to able to take part, then yes, there would have been an issue (to me anyway). That collection is quite new, and is still making Konami money in retail stores as we speak.

Now, I know about all the intellectual property legality/illegality stuff, but that's not what I'm addressing. That's whole different argument that I'm trying not to touch. All I am trying to get at, is that I've always been for supporting large and small game companies, and downloading games that I can still readily buy which are still making their respective creators money, is something I don't agree with. So while the idea of downloading something like the DOS version of Prince of Persia can be discussed with good points to be made on both sides, I find it hard to justify downloading something like Quake for free from a pirating site.

Anyway, I don't how well I explained all that, but I hope it was well enough to give at least a little insight into what I'm rambling about. I know it's not likely to make much sense to a lot of folks, but that's how I see one aspect of the vast emu gaming battlefield :)

This is a distinct possibility. However, what percentage of the people who download such a game do you honestly think are going to go out and buy that new game after they pirated it? Something tells me there's going to be a substantial chunk who will happily keep their downloaded copy, and leave it at that while hiding behind "I wasn't going to buy it anyway, so they're not losing money".

Ed Oscuro- That sounds like a Virtual Boy challenge

Sorry for the double post, but I'll volunteer to help with the banners. Not sure if you're still looking for assistance in that area, but I thought I'd offer.

I will be more than happy to make the banners again. Sad to hear you won't be involved DJI :(

EDIT: Wow, didn't see there were a few others interested in making banners. I'll step aside and let them have a shot 8)

If overkill55 is stepping aside this year, and Josh is only possibly going to do one, then I'll do as many banners as you guys need.

Just let me know if you want me to help :)

I already made 2 banners. I'm not sure how many that leaves for us to do. We need 5, I guess? One for each voting week?

Pardon my ignorance, but how can you have two banners done already, if we don't know what "weeks" are decided upon yet, or what games are eligible to voted on for those weeks? Aren't the banners supposed to be made up the choices for a given week?

For starters, there is the main banner to be made, which DJI created for last year's. Aside from that, there are just the ones for each week, which of course have not been decided upon yet
