How about a compilation of IREM-games ???

Post by jochen »

In the past companies like Capcom, Taito, Midway, Tecmo and
lately Snk have released game compilations, often with shmups.

You can play "1941" in Capcom Collection 2 and don´t need a
Supergrafx to enjoy this game (or the arcade-cabinet).

Irem released some early "80 ´s arcade games" on the saturn.
But how about a compilation with " R-Type Leo, Gunforce I and II,
Mystic Riders and other great arcade titles from this company.

Today I wrote an E-Mail ( webmaster@irem.co.jp ) and I wait for
an answer. I know that Irem was some time out of the business
in the 90´s, but I hope they still have the rights for their
arcade games.

Maybe the chances for an "Irem antholgy" might be bigger if others
send this request also to Irem ?

I don´t want to play R-Type as an strategy game ( released on the
psp). :(

Irem did make an "R-Type Final" for the PS2 in 2004, so I would expect them to still have their original rights. It may happen, and it's always worth asking them outright.

Now it's not what you're looking for entirely, but there is an Irem Arcade Classics made up of Zippy Race, Spartan, and 10 Yard Fight. And of course, there's R-Types.

Would love to see them on a DS. Don't think they'd sell on a PSP though with all the emulators around...

Personally, I would love a good port of stuff like Cosmic Cop, Mystic Riders, and Gunforce II already.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

No DS ports for me. Just not a good system for playing twitch games on, in my view.

Dear Jochen,

Thank you for contacting us.

Unfortunately, we don’t have any plan of released game compilations in the past
now,
but we view your requests as valuable.
We would appreciate it if you give us any further problems, questions or
comments.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
IREM SOFTWARE ENGINEERING INC.

Here ´s the answer I got from Irem.

Maybe we hava a chance if we make a "poll." ????

If 1000 shmup-fans ask Irem - maybe there might be a chance.

I have heard many companies count one request/complaint etc. as 1000, as there's some customer service law that of every 1000 people inclined to write in about an issue, only one will actually do it, so maybe the poll's worthwhile.

So, LGB - 10 Yard Fight is Irem? I love that game and never knew. I knew it Taito were involved, but I never knew the developer.

So - if this might be true - should we start a poll and send the
outcome to "Irem" ????

I want to pay good money for "Irem-games". Nobody should be forced
to play this games on Mame

I honestly think that the most effective way to do this would be by directly e-mailing them about our interest in this. If we were able to organize a grassroots e-mail campaign we may be able to convince Irem that this could be a profitable venture for them.

Another possible strategy would be to contact popular game magazines/websites to get them to help us build more interest in it.

However even if we were to do that the chances of it actually working are still fairly low.

Count me in for a retro pack with Irem stuff on it.

But I want quite alot for $50. They can include all the PS1 games from the last Irem retro pack as well.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Right - let' do that then. Anybody know the best way to sort an online poll, or would a sustained email campaign be best? I'm emailling them now. It's a two-mintue job so you all should!

Jochen - do what you can to encourage people to email and it will spread!

Always so negative about non-Nintendo systems...

I figure such a compilation should be available for PS2 because everybody (except MathU) has one and it's the home to many other compilations, arcade ports, and arcade controllers. A Wii version would also be nice since many compilations and arcade ports (Williams Pinball, Metal Slug, SNK Arcade Classics, Shikigami III, Guilty Gear XX AC) are also hitting the Wii these days, and it will probably be this gen's PS2.

I didn't realize Irem developed the game that became Kickle Cubicle. I have that for NES - I still love that game!

I'd totally be in for an Irem comp, but I want R-Type LEO!!!!!!

If anything, they should make a compilation of arcade games that weren't ported before, like R-Type Leo.

Excuse me? I take offence to that. I am not a fanboy. I own a PS2 myself, but it's had its time now and I would prefer new games get released on current-gen systems. I'm tired of good stuff getting even more relegated to a niche because it's going to the PS2, a console that most gamers stopped caring about a while ago. Thunderforce VI going to it pisses me off the most.

A problem is that Irem themselves have said that the guys they have programming for them now don't come from a shmup background so don't really understand the fundamentals and nauses that makes a great game.
That was supposedly a main reason as to why Rtype was turned into a turn based game.

I'm not sure if this stems from the fact many or most non-shmup games are produced on middleware anyway and its here where the talent is (rather the being able to program really well).

But then you have to ask yourself if this is true then how on earth did devs know how to program the likes of Moon Patrol in the first place.
Fact is, the time taken to learn to program these remakes (or even new games) is clearly an issue for Irem SE's current team.

Although it should be easy to remake a game, i can only guess they can't afford to risk the time.

There are 140 Million PS2s. That's what, 115 Million more than the best selling new system? Take that, new generation.

Worked for me - but no reply!

On the subject of a PS2 release - Ceph hits the nail on the head with the simplicity of his point. Until only a very few months ago, the PS2 was still raking in more cash for Sony than the PS3 - there's a lot of them out there and easily enough to support game sales, as proved numerous times recently by titles that continue to rank up sales on the system.

How many of them are chipped? Because that's what you need in order to play a JP-only IREM collection...contrary to the PSP and DS.
Which brings me to my another questions:
How many of those millions of PS2 owners are seriously willing to shell out 30-40 €/$ for such a compilation?
Why should anyone play them on a PS2 when they can just fire up the roms in Mame? Xbla/psn/wiiware with online scoreboards sounds more like it. The biggest money maker would probably be a DS port...not much arcadey stuff on it and lots of potential customers.
