I grew up on '80's sitcoms, and Golden Girls was one of my favorites. So it was sad news to me that, on Tuesday, Estelle Getty, who played Sofia, passed away. The NY Times article that my brother read said that she was 84! I would've figured that she was older then that, but the article went on to say that she was the daughter of Polish immigrants.
Her acting talent on that show was amazing, and it's great that all the episodes are now available on DVD. Long live '80's sitcoms!

When I used to watch Silver Spoons back in the early 1980s, I thought that it would be cool to own such an arcade in the living room as featured in that show.
RIP Estelle. I recall watch the Golden Girls back in the day. Funny show indeed. ^_~

And a train that ran through your living room and everything else that rich little bastard had.
I read that she was the youngest member of the cast.

I always regarded the Golden Girls as a prime time horror show, one that would never be allowed in this era of conservative American television..
Just the thought of the way the show used to insinuate that its elderly cast members still had sex was enough to give this kid nightmares for a week...

Thanks, I'll change that.
"conservative American television"?? TV was a LOT more conservative in the 1980's then it is today. Yes there was talk about sex on the Golden Girls, but nothing was ever shown, and the writing was intelligent; not like the idiocy that passes for TV today.
I did have a crush on Blair, from the "Fact's of Life".

I just looked it up on IMDB. Rue McClanahan (Blanche) was the youngest. Dorothy was supposed to be Estelle Getty's daughter, but she was only one year younger than her.
Good grief, I think this just turned into the too much information thread!
At any rate, I think the makeup artists were pretty amazing to make Getty look so old and wrinkled-20 years ago! I mean, now, it could probably just be done with computers.
