Silent Bomber (PSX) vs Canon/Gun Spike (DC)

Post by undamned »

These look a bit similar to me. I've not played Silent Bomber, so I'm trying to figure out if it's worth the $30+ it goes for. It looks like a combination of Gunspike and Rayforce's lock system?

Please enlighten and feel free to gush about Silent Bomber as it looks ace.

Silent Bomber is kinda cheap in its PAL incarnation...I think. I think it got a rerelease.

I got a domestic US copy some time ago, it's a decent game. $30 would be a steal for this game from what I can tell.

Basically, dash around and stick bombs on things, then blow them up.

I hate the plot and especially the U.S. dub though. Still was an enjoyable game, not sure if I'd go back to it to try to get better scores (or rankings, can't remember) though.

From a review of Cannon Spike:
It would be great if (Capcom must be thinking this, since they’re the king of sequels) that when they begin work on el Canon Spike II they headhunt the development team for Silent Bomber from Bandai and merge the two ideas. Oh, now that would be an intense shooter.

Silent Bomber is the magnum opus of blowing shit up. It's technically solid (controls, framerate, camera, etc) and has heaps and heaps of explosive destruction piled on top. The explosions are some of the most intense you'll see from any game, and their sound effects have that Raiden quality of being simultaneously piercing and floor-shaking. Also has one hell of a last boss battle, which reaches authentic oldschool action game difficulty. Enemies and bosses are generally interesting to take down, besides the sheer blow-up factor, and it also has a nice treasure-hunting upgrade system. You'll be doing a lot more damage after a few levels than you do initially. The lock-on works flawlessly; if you've played Neo Contra, it's similar to its anti-air lock-on, and just as responsive.

Basically a bulletproof game for anyone who just wants to airdash around the place blowing up, setting on fire, shorting out and crushing everything in sight (often simultaneously). I really can't recommend that game highly enough.

I LOVE Silent Bomber. $30 though? Kind of steep for such an old game. Look harder, I bet you can find it for cheaper.

It has a great arcade-y feel, though, tons of explosions, really fun level/gameplay design, and quality bosses. It's just awesome.

Silent Bomber trivia: The USA version of Silent Bomber has the same front cover design as that of it's original Japanese counterpart. ^_~

If you can scour your used PSX game bargin bins, this particular PSX action genre title can be had for cheap. Pay no more than $10 to $15 for one is a steal. I got a used copy for a mere ten bucks and it came complete with original PSX CD-Rom case along with instruction manual as well. ^_~

I have it, and it's pure gameplay sex. I can let you test-drive it on my PSP.
