Stupid trick Q - Shadows of the colossus

A friend of mine recently got to play my copy of this and to my amazement in the first 10 minutes of play he actually stood up on top of the horse whilst galloping in the open terrain. I've completed this many times and never been able to do that. After many further attempts he cannot repeat this feat either. I am dumb struck how he done it. Looked at Gamefaqs, the move is not listed.

I'm sure alot of you have played it. Whats the button combo for doing it?

I'm pretty sure it's the climb button, but I never really found it useful when playing.

Shadow of the Colossus Hint: Stand While Riding
Press and hold R1 and X while galloping.

Actually, you hold R1 and press up to stand on the horse. It's useful to make very high jumps...you can climb on the 2nd colossus with this trick.

Additionally, you can hold R1 and press left or right to hang on the sides of the horse.

You can use the standing and jumping of the horses back trick to grab onto flying birds in the game too which is pretty funky.

Very useful move when used against the desert colossus as well.

Just outside of the cave where you fight the 10th colossus, there's a spot where many hawks are flying close to the ground. You can easily grab one in mid-air and fly around for a while.

Trying to grab one with the horseback jump is next to impossible, though.

Can't you also grab a big fish or something like that?
Somewhere should be a big lake with one inside and if you get him you can swim along with him?

I'm not aware of any fish in the whole game. Lakes are pretty much lifeless.

Maybe the colossi ate them?
