More helpful info regarding Time Soldiers & A-Jax PCBs..

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

Time Soldiers - licensed to Romstar for distribution in the USA...

A-Jax - was released under "Typhoon" name change for the European arcade market and released under "A-Jax" name label for both JPN & USA arcade markets. The only real difference between all three versions was the main title screen but the rest of the game remains the same through out graphics-wise & gameplay-wise... ^_~

Interesting A-Jax factoid: the PCB does output in both mono & stereo output considering that it came out in 1987 timeframe. Konami was known to "push the technological factor" back in the day in the mid to late 1980's with their innovative arcade PCB title releases..... ^_~

I'm not concerned about US publishers in this format. Thanks though.

I include the English/overseas name in [*] if I feel it is commonly used. Doesn't apply there.

Are we going to be tested on this?

And will it be part of our final grade?

For oxtsu,

I see...so your list is basically a complilation of mainly Japanese arcade shmup PCBs with the original Japanese game title and possible date of release (if provided) then?

Care to include/start a 1986 Japanese arcade list with this PCB listing?

1986 -- Capcom's Hyper Dyne "Zettai Gatta" Sidearms PCB

One possible correction: Gratia - 1996 (listed '95)

That is a tricky one. I've got two good internet sources that say it's '95 for the Japan release. The screenshots I see from the various emu sites do show a 1996 copyright (which if different from the actual release date, have always been the year prior, not ahead), though perhaps this is in USA mode (Jaleco Mega System 32 has all regions in the ROM cart, which can be changed by dip settings). I'll double check my Gamest issues from '96 (luckily I have the full set). If someone could check Gratia in JPN mode that would be helpful too. Thanks for the challenge, Rob.

Anthony, the only thing I could gather about Gradius II ver.XF is that it is an unofficial hack (a good one, not shitbrain bootleg style). Don't know what exactly was changed.

@Mods: why don't stick dis thred? I find it very usefull to make an idea of what softwarehouse were producing and how they moving in the same year. It really make you figure out what have been the true geniuses in shmup developing: look at those other games produced in the Batsugun year and see what a genius Ikeda was.

A big thank to Oxtsu for his wonderfull work.

rtw -- oooh...purely a mistake there, Atomic ROBO-KID was '88 for sure. I had it as 1989 (before I did the '88 list), but new sources came through with the true month/year of release. I must have forgotten to remove the entry on '89. Thanks for the check!

stratos -- grazie infinite. :)

And is this Silver Millennium arcade shmup title playable in Mame/Mame32 emulation?

I like that sexy end-stage boss -- looks like she's in a bit of pain (possibly from cramps?)... ^_~

Hadn't heard a peep about this game anywhere on the web prior. :)

THis list is a fantastic idea. I'm finding shmups I've never heard of before. OI! But it's gonna be a hell of a task.

Grind Stormer, declared a "clone" of V-V by MAME, even though it was released the year before. Instead of the Gradius powerup bar, you collect powerups directly and use bombs, a bit more like other Toaplan shooters. Supposedly this "Bomber Mode" can be accessed through V-V, but I've never seen it. (It's in one of those strategy threads, somewhere)

However, the Sega Genesis/Megadrive port allows you to change between these two, with the Gradius-like mode called "V-V" and the Bomber mode called "Grind Stormer".

Grind Stormer - 1992 - Toaplan.

Edit:
MAWS wrote:Bomber Mode : Input code Right, Left, Button2, Left, Down, Button1, Up, Left on title screen after inserted a credit. Displayed 'BOMBER. Ver' and the game system is changed to "Grind Stormer"'s one.

Yeah, I'm aware of the differences. While I agree that one is pretty major, there's lots of games with regional differences, and I'm not trying to do seperate entries for that (this list is from a japan perspective unless the game was developed elsewhere). Also trying to keep notes to a minimum until (if) I get a webpage made for this. I'll go ahead and make a note in the V-V entry since you mention it though. As far as the supposed earlier release date on Grind Stormer, I seriously doubt it, but if you find any evidence besides the copyright date I'm all ears (reason: the rom date stamp is Dec 1992, common for games released next year Jan-Feb. this list is concerned with actual release dates). As always, any input/feedback is appreciated, thanks.

what are some good ones to download that would work on a P3 800mhz. I have viper phase 1 and that works(also have an actual arcade machine).

Might want to include the new Fantasy Zone II? gigadrive32's post. Kind of Cave festival-ish, but since you're including those.

Great thread, really good stuff oxtsu!

Super Xevious - Namco - 1984
Tranformer - Sega - 1986
Horizon - Irem - 1985

this one is a bit borderline(but I would still call it a shmup):
Scooter Shooter - Konami - 1985

also it may be a good idea to remove Kiki kaikai or to add games like Jackal, ikari warriors, nija emaki and Mercs.

one of these that could be included though is:
Youjyuden - Irem - 1986
(levels alternate between kiki kai kai style gameplay and flying vertical shmup)

i think thats it for th 1984-1986 period

It's unlikely to be an error; for most variant families the prevalent MAME policy is to treat bootlegs and hacks as clones, the latest official one as the parent and the older official revisions, back to the original one, as clones.
It makes sense because the many players who try the parent version but not the clones end up with the presumably least buggy official version.
