Top 10 Platformers of all time?

Post by undamned »

So, we've got some gamers here with broad taste and some years of gaming to back them up: what, in your opinion, are the top 10 platformers of all time?

Granted I haven't played some of the highly praised platformers, such as Umiharakawase Shun (aka, "the game with the fishing rod girl") or Chippoke Ralph No Daibouken (aka, "The Adventures of Little Ralph"), here are mine:

01.) Super Mario Bros. (torn) (NES)
02.) Sonic (torn) (GEN)
03.) Super Metroid (SNES)
04.) Megaman (torn) (S/NES)
05.) Castlevania 4 (SNES)
06.) Ghouls & Ghosts (GEN)
07.) Contra (torn) (S/NES)
08.) Alien Homonid (GC)
09.) Bonk (torn) (TG16)
10.) Earthworm Jim (torn) (SNES)

I haven't played Little Ralph yet but Umihara Kawase series is the shit. Umihara, Don Doko Don series, and Metal Slug 1, 3, X are the best.

Gunstar Heroes
Strider 2
Osman
Mega Man 8
Castlevania Bloodlines
Dracula X Chi no Rondo
Castlevania Symphony of the Night
Flying Warriors
X-Men
Sonic CD

I guess it's just me but I couldn't stand Umiharakawase Shun. Too much platforming and not enough battling for me (well, from my list, it's obvious I'm not big on the more playful sidescrollers)...

Umiharakawase Shun is interesting, but I never got too much into it.

I'd choose my top 10, but will you consider Flashback and Another World "Platform" games, or are we talking about fast-console-action type of platform games only?

Oh, whatever.

I'll list all platform games that I couldn't live without :D

Here it goes, in no specific order.

Another World (Amiga)
Turrican 2 (Amiga)
Turrican 3 (Amiga)
Ruff 'n' Tumble (Amiga)
Gunstar Heroes (Mega-Drive)
Benefactor (Amiga)

Arabian Nights (Amiga)
Soccer Kid (Amiga)
Alien Soldier (Mega-Drive)
Blade Lords (MSX)

Dynamite Headdy (Mega-Drive)
James Pond 2: Codename Robocod (Amiga)
Kid Chameleon (Mega-Drive)
Moonwalker (Mega-Drive)
Parasol Stars (PC-Engine)

Qwak (Amiga)
Rainbow Islands (Arcade)
Quackshot (Mega-Drive)
Rodland (Arcade)
Sonic The Hedgehog (Mega-Drive)
Sonic 2 (Mega-Drive)
Treasure of USAS (MSX)
Out to Lunch (SNES)

I know it's a big list, but All those games would get a 10/10 rating from me, so it would be too hard to leave any of them out of the list. (Of course, if we were going to have a top 25 like we did for shmups, they maybe I'll organize then a litlle better :D)

Edit: I've added Out to Lunch to the list

It's incredible how much flexibility I see here in the "platformers" genre, as opposed as how strict and conservative the forum tends to be for the "shmup" genre.

It's also odd that everybody seemed to take platformers to mean sidescrollers even though nobody really disagrees that Super Mario 64 and the like are 3D platformers.

Not to piss in everybodys' Wheaties, but there's an awful lot of run n' guns being listed. Where's all the compartmentalized dorkery we see on here when defining shmups?

Yep, you're the only one :)

The Genesis version had much better level designs and the difficulty wasn't geared towards 3 year old quadriplegics with down syndrome. I mean, the SNES version wasn't just easy, but you had to really go out of your way to TRY to die. That game was as solid as puff of smoke :(

Aladdin on Genesis was back when Dave Perry had some pull and could put together a team worth a damn (and before everyone was fed up with his shit). Those were the days. Aladdin...Earthworm Motherfuckin' Jim...MDK...Sacrifice.... mmm.....

Probably, considering even Nintendo Power only said that the SNES Aladdin offered better play control over its Genesis cousin.

I agree, mostly since the MD version has Intestinal Distress although the SNES EWJ really does look somewhat to a lot better than the Genesis version depending on the area.

The Genny isn't the best version of Earthworm Jim, however. There are also the SEGA CD version and the Windows 95 port of it. I heard good things about the DOS ports of EWJ 1 and 2 too.

And there's the arguably slightly worse GBA port due to it not looking as good as the originals.

Yeah, dementia already mentioned the superior SCD Earthworm Jim Special Edition; I was only talking between SNES and Genesis (since everybody to my knowledge already feel that the SE versions are better) so I left that part out.

Things started to go downhill with Messiah, IMHO.

Uh, what sh*t of Perry's are you referring to?
