As for actually playing stuff, the farther back you go the fewer games you'll find that I'm likely to still enjoy, but there are a handful that I still love (I'm sure I've mentioned my irrational love for Warlords on the 2600).
There's nothing like a four-player "slug it out fest" of 2600 Warlords gaming sessions and two 100% working pairs of paddle controllers (none of that shitty glitchy paddles stuff either). What is your favorite color and which corner position do you prefer as well? ^_~

It is still possible to win with absolutely no blocks in your castle's section and still deflect the cannon shots on cue. It's funny when the blue and green CPU-controller castles sometimes self-destruct -- sometimes not.

No limits here; I'm into a lot of stuff from "before my time" (I'm 22), such as Vic 20, Spectrum and C64 games. And early arcade stuff, natch.

Good call on Batman, JoshF. Absolutely beautiful game. I love how only parts of buildings are drawn on the black backgrounds (though detailed and with a good depth of field), creating a really simple and awesome shadowed effect. It's a very gritty looking game in a way that no modern title could hope to emulate.

Agreed. Kirby, Batman, Mega Man (later games) all look incredible.
My cut off is the SMS/NES/MSX generation.

16bit era was the shit. I play a little bit of nes and thats about it, IMO if you delve much farther back than that you tend to get a lot of quickly made shit with very few gems.

I don't have a limit in terms of age at all... still really enjoy many 2600 games, for example Spider Fighter, H.E.R.O, Cosmic Ark, Megamania and obviously Space Invaders. I think a lot of C64 games are still fun today as well - Boulderdash, Pastfinder, Bounder, Encounter, Stellar-7, and many of the Llamasoft games are still very nice. (I'd love to see a 'Complete Llamasoft' compilation to be released for a modern console one day.) And obviously many old arcade games still hold up very well too.

What I do have is a cut off in terms of quality. Lordstar is spot on in his above post, you do tend to get a ton of derivative crap to go alongside the occasional timeless gem. especially where old console and 8-bit computer games are concerned.

I think it also helps your perspective (or maybe just taints it with harmful nostalgia?) :-) to have grown up with all this stuff being released when you're a lad.

This is probably truth to EVERY system on EVERY era. I believe that when things were released before you were born, you won't know exactly what are the gems, and THEN you will have to look around the shit to find the gems. I felt like that when I begun emulating the C64, as I grew up with the MSX, I knew shit about the C64, and I played a lot of shit games. Yet I played some really good ones :) .

At least with the MSX, you know you can go with the big names, like Konami, Taito, Namco, Compile, and you probably will get good games. (In case of Konami, unless you happen to play Green Beret, I think it's just impossible to get a real bad game).
