Gradius & Salamander collection...the best version???

Post by Violent Ken »

Hi!

I want to buy these great games (Gradius & Salamander collection) for PS1 or Saturn...

Which version is better and why? I think Saturn version is better due to the best 2D capabilities of the SS but some people say that the PS1 version is better...can someone confirm me?

Thanks for your replies!

PS version of Gradius Deluxe Pack has supposedly closer to arcade screen resolution, but the Saturn version goes for far cheaper, other than that both are identical, another small exception Saturn has grainier opening movies.

Don't know about the Salamander Deluxe Pack if it had screen res differences, but again both versions are identical, though I believe the PSX version you can back out of a game if you don't feel like playing it after you start. Ditto on the opening movie as well on the Saturn, grainy. Again the Saturn version is far cheaper than the PSX version (then again I got lucky, one "landed" in my lap from a buddy of mine, saw a PSX Gradius Deluxe Pack PSX for $49.99 on ebay awhile back, someone is either modest or has no idea the value of the game).

Back to Gradius Deluxe Pack for a moment, supposedly the Saturn version has black bars on the sides of the screen, the PSX also seems to have these black bars as well, so the whole screen resolution thing is really throwing me off here, I'd have to see a side by side comparison of screenshots to believe it.

All in all neither version will steer you wrong, though the Saturn versions of both may save your wallet the strain.

I don't know about the PSX versions, but all these packs are very fine on Saturn.

Oh, I would like to mention to don't bother getting the PS1 version if you're intending to run it on a PS2.

Just to clarify, this is for Gradius Collection and it means Gradius II runs in constant slow-motion (if I recall correctly). The Salamander Collections runs just fine.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Firstly, thanks for your replies!

I think I'll take the PS1 versions for playing on my HDTV with my YUV cable, my Saturn is in RGB...

But the problem is mainly on Gradius II on a PS2? It's strange that the game plays in slowmotion! :?

What about if you run Gradius Collection on a PS3 with the emotion engine or software emulation. Still slowdown?

i could have sworn the ps1 version had those black bars also?
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

The game actually does for Gradius and Salamander Deluxe Packs, though to be fair I run GDP off my PC since I don't have a chipped PSX, but I have played the Saturn one on my Saturn and via emulator (testing purposes awhile back), both have the bars even on my PC.

You shouldn't buy the game and save up your money instead; you were selling your Cave goodies 4x market value to pay for your surgery that you had last week. Remember ? That's what you've told us.

another advantage in getting the PS version this day and age would be that you could play the games on a custom firmware PSP. (if you don't want to buy them again in UMD release, that is).
