"Unforgiven" (Clint Eastwood & Gene Hackman) is great. Not a standard "good vs evil" Western. Very amoral, down and dirty take on old west violence, and violence in general. Although it has protagonists to sympathise with and antagonists to hate, it'll definitely leave you with a lot to think over once the shooting stops.

"The Unforgiven" (Burt Lancaster) is a completely different movie and story, just fyi. Haven't seen it, myself.

"The Machinist" is pretty entertaining. It's nowhere near what I'd call a horror movie (it really doesn't go for scares of any kind, though there are a few unpleasant scenes), but its atmosphere is grimy and increasingly surreal throughout. Very convincing, self-destructive performance from Christian Bale, even ignoring his alarmingly skeletal appearance. It's got a decent story which will probably make you want to re-watch it, if you enjoy the first time around.

Ive seen the Eastwood version. Great!
Didnt know the Lancaster version existed till I tried to find caincan's mention of The U. aka: the Begotten...

Im downloading the Machinist now & will watch it tonight.
The Machinist, while not specifically of the 'horror' genre, is still within my personal parameters of what I classify as a "psychological horror/thriller".
Intelligent, atmospheric, tense, creepy, strange, odd, scary, bizarre, strange, psychotic etc etc etc.
So I guess I should reclassify to include the "Horror/Thriller" genre.

audition is an awesome flick, as is any other film by takashi miike

i would recommend some lucio fulci stuff as well.....for psychological stuff you might enjoy his film "the new york ripper"....great stuff...but all of his films are top notch

for some really psychological stuff maybe check out some of shinya tsukamoto's films...particularly tetsuo the iron man, and to a lesser degree, tetsuo 2:body hammer....very interesting films and very different

i prefer japanese horror over western for newer stuff, and i love older western horror too...also a big fan of italian stuff like fulci and argento....

im a horror nut(zombie films in particular)

if you would like a nice comprehensive list of GOOD horror films i will throw it together this weekend

nice to see this thread....i love to share the horror genre with others....most casual horror film viewers have no idea whats out there.....

Le Locataire (The Tenant)

and

What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?

Were the scariest movies I've ever seen. I'm for psychological thrillers.

For jonny5,

Please do put together a comprensive film list of good horror films...I'd like see what your recommendations are. ^_~

Sounds like the yearly Shockerfest would be just the cool independent horror film festival for you. It gets bigger and better each passing year -- a couple years ago, Adrienne Barbeau was a special guest star and was gracious enough to pose for pictures and autographs. ^_~

An interesting bit of trivia regarding "The Machinist".

From Soundtracknet.com:
The Machinist was directed by Brad Anderson, who made the particularly suspenseful "Session 9" as a return to what scary movies used to be like, and here, once again, his desire to harken back to a more old-school approach to horror and suspense works.

Interesting to me anyway, as I thought Session 9 was a particularly good movie.

Its the old 'degrees of separation' thingie raising its lil' head... :P
