I thought the topic was a bit odd...but not entirely off base. I have commented on games I don't play, usually to explain why not, but usually in 'off topic' forums and not on a site dedicated to those types of games.
So for example, talking about FPS games in the offtopic forum of a RPG game is fine, but talking about a sports game in the forum for that game won't happen on my part.
As far as being on topic and active as a shmup game...well, it's not far off. I do play them, and I have played them for a long time now. I just don't have the resources to import the PCB ones and thus my playing is limited to what I find locally, or I buy for a console or PC.
I just don't play them constantly and to the exclusion of everything else. I have too many games overall, of which I enjoy, to play only shmups. So I may go a few months without playing one at all. Other times I'll pick one back up and play it constantly for a few days/weeks until I get tired of it again. (I played R-Type Final like that, trying to unlock all the ships.)
Right now I am re-playing Diablo II...the recent announcement of Diablo III has got me excited about the series again, so I'm refreshing my memory on what I loved and hated about the game. I have about 3-4 games I'm actively working on between others right now...eventually I'll finish one and start up another. (Like Gradius V...bought that one before R-Type Final...but never got around to actually playing it seriously.)

Okay I'm trying to learn Trigger Hearts on the Jap Dreamcast,
I can get to level 3 on 1 credit milking the first boss for a good 10 minutes and beating Cruel Tear..
I'm also playing Magical Chase, Super Star Soldier and Gradius on the PC all rather easy and I can 1 life them all..
Then I see people post there collection who own every Cave game then, then the same person posts"I just bought Death Smiles" and today they got the New Dodonpachi.. Either there gaming gods or they just don't play games..
Two chain Ikuruga would take ages.. Then I see complete tools like Dupree a few millions posts but nohing in the way of replays or high scores

Why talk about shmups or other games when you could be playing them.

Not many new shmups being released. There are only so mny things to say about DDP or Company X vs. Company Y or how credit feeding is lame.Shatterhand wrote:Taking a look at the forum lately, it seems no one talks about shmups anymore. People talk about off-topic. It won't take long for the off-topic forum to have more posts than the shmups forum.
I actually learned about a lot of new titles I hadn't played by reading the shumps forum, but I don't have any new information to add about e.g. Batrider.

Playing shmups is often stressful; writing about them is not.
Playing shmups while working doesn't work; writing a post here is a nice, quick break from work. I don't even have to leave my computer.
I like to write daily because I think it's good for my brain. Writing about shmups and music is a fun way to practice writing.
Writing about shmups here is more social than playing shmups.
Still, I'd rather have a high score than a high post count any day of the week.

Agree 100% with the Professors wise words above.
With regard to Dantes comment on peoples' collection size compared to their ability - for one it's hard to know really how well or often people play without them posting in the high score threads - and some of us just like to get our hands on as many as possible to actually play a whole wide range. I'm the first to admit I'm a jack of all shmups and a master of none (ok - I've done OK on a few high score boards), but I just love to play lots of 'em. Recently I have really focussed compared to a year ago, but I'm taking this a little close to off-topic/old ground...
EDIT: Spelling of Professor!

Fair point - except there should always be new stuff to add to the high score threads, and there's a wealth of information needs adding to the strategy section. Those to parts of this forum have really motivated my playing, and it's where the real shit is as far as I'm concerned.escadrille wrote: I actually learned about a lot of new titles I hadn't played by reading the shumps forum, but I don't have any new information to add about e.g. Batrider.
I rarely post in off topic as a result... though I post in the main shmups chat threads all the time of course...
