Might have come from a spam bot. It happened to a number of people over on OCR after a bot registered, and sent a spam to folks via PM. The mods caught it and deleted the message from everyone's inbox pretty quick... which left everyone with a PM notification, yet no PM to read.

1) Person sends you a PM
2) Person deletes it before you've read it (you can do that from your Outgoing box).
3) Server can't unsend the 'you have a PM' message.
