For those with Japanese 360s

Post by TodayIsForgotten »

Im looking at getting one so i can play the shmups that i'll never see here in the USA. I was curious (if anyone even replies) for those in the US, what stepdown transformer are you using? or other alternatives.

The 360's power is external. So you can use a 360 power supply of your region on any region 360.

That isn't 100% correct since their are two different 360 power supplies. One is 203 watts, the other 175 watts (newer Falcon chip).

Im not huge on electronics, but could you technically use a 203w on the falcon? or is it not the same as a computer's power supply unit where you could have 2 hard drives and a dvd burner using a small percentage of a 1000w PSU or a larger percentage of a 300w PSU...?

The power plug input of the back of the 360 is different for each model (zephyr, falcon).

They still fit, though. I've been using the PSU from the original model 360 on my JPN Falcon and it's fine.

The only difference of note, beyond the one having a metal casing and the other plastic, is that the lock clips on the sides of the metal one don't clip into anything on the new model 360, which potentially means it's possible for the lead to come out while the thing's switched on. But it's a snug enough fit for that to be highly unlikely.

are there even any exclusive shmups for the japanese circlebox? aren't they all arcade ports? or at least been localized for the USA system?

They're exclusive arcade ports. It's easier and, ultimately, cheaper than sourcing the arcade versions of them.

I'd imagine that any proper exclusives will be XBLA releases, thanks to the profit margins, which also means that they'll inevitably be worldwide releases.

I've not had cause to regret my purchase so far. I only own four games for the thing, but it's still been worthwhile (I'm getting a lot from Battle Fantasia right now, although I wish others were playing it so that I could actually get a match going online), and that'll only improve when the Ketsui, DDP:DOJ, Raiden IV and Otomedius ports finally arrive. It's hardly an essential bit of kit, but it's a nice thing to have access to.
