Best giant monster movies?

What are they? Beyond the occasional Godzilla flick that pops up on TV I'm pretty much out of the loop.

Funny you should mention that. I just finished up a session of Earth Defense Force 2017.

I remember seeing that on TCM a few years back. Again with the nuclear overtones.

For Damocles,

You should check out the cool Japanese created CGI short film of Negadon: The Monster from Mars out on DVD. It was released in the USA courtesy of U.S. Manga Corps back in 2006 and has a duration of 70 minutes in length. Bought my copy when it first came out and it's a hoot with a bad-ass towering robot fighting a huge monster alien. Who's gonna win?

Negadon has that cool scratched-up dirty aged movie cel look to it that really gives it an aged apperance which is a rarity in CGI films these days with their super nice & unblemished looks (reminescent of Grindhouse's aged & gritty movie celluoid look accomplished with custom-made CGI effects). ^_~

-The newer Gameras: Guardian of the universe, Attack of legion, Advent of Iris

-Ray Harryhausen stuff: 20million miles to earth, the beast from 20.000 fathoms, it came from beneath the sea

-Other Toho stuff: Frankenstein conquers the world, Space Amoeba, the Mysterians, King Kong escapes (some like War of the Gargantuas and Rodan - They are probably very good but I don't)

-Random: Gorgo, Gappa, Guila, The black scorpion, Them!

That are probably the most important ones. To be honest, Godzilla films are still my favourite (late sixties till early seventies are the best!)

Ultraman & his band of rubber monster enemies!

Theres just nothing better than seeing a giant Ultraman ( or Ultra 7 ) do a roundhouse spin while holding Godzilla ( or any number of bizarre monsters ) by his tail & tossing him into the 6' mockup...er, I mean, the real city of Tokyo & crushing skyscrapers to smithereens!

Yeah, I want this movie on Blu-ray. (Reign Of Fire Blu-ray is ok but not at all in the same league as I imagine Dragonslayer would be remastered at 1920x1080... awesome indeed)

The 90s Gamera trilogy are quite possibly the best giant monster movies around. Gamera the Brave isn't in the same league, but is still a very good movie.

AFAIK, the only Godzilla films available in the UK at the moment are BFI's quality release of the 1954 original and a shoddy version of King Kong vs Godzilla. The best DVD versions available in English are Classic Media's new R1 versions, for the few they've released. For most of the rest the best versions are Madman Entertainment's Australian R4 releases. The only legal English versions of Return of Godzilla and Godzilla vs Biollante are the R3 Hong Kong versions from Universe Laser & Video.

Other great movies are the Daimajin trilogy, Dogora, Rodan (which has a crappy current R1 DVD, but is getting a better version in September), and Atragon (though the monster is more a side dish).
