Dustin for the Spectrum. Prison Break/Papillon thing. It's shit, I just keep going back to it remembering it being a lot better than it is. I think it was the first game I played on tape, or Lawnmower Simulator maybe.

Every once in awhile I get a hankering to go through SotN again...and now that I've got it on the PSP, I'll have even fewer excuses not to do so, heh heh.

A far weirder one for me, though, is Soul Blazer on the SNES...from time to time I just have to play through it, although I can almost do it in my sleep.

I always do a runthrough of Final Fantasy Tactics about once a year or so. To date I've logged well more than 1000 hours total on it.

Mostly platformers. I wish I would get paid everytime I beat Mega Man 2, Sonic 2, or Mario 3.

I also play through Secret of Mana and Final Fantasy VI pretty often. And In the last year, I must have played through God Hand at least 6 times.

As for shmups I usually go back to, either Raiden (my first vertical) or Gradius III SNES (my first horizontal).

Super Metroid, by far.

Other than that, SMB3 like the OP. Tetris Attack has to be #3.

Since I don't think SSBM counts as old yet, I would have to say Metal Slug.

Hell, I haven't even touched a lot of the longer games I own in ages, new OR old.

Some of the older games I'll go back and replay every so often:

-Legend of Zelda
-Super Metroid
-Kirby's Adventure
-Lufia and the Fortress of Doom (a largely overlooked SNES RPG with some gfeat music. I'm hoping this makes it to Wii VC at some point)
-Epic Pinball
-Final Fantasy 1 (the NES version, the remakes just don't seem to cut it for some reason)
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (I only played SotN fir the first time recently, with the XBLA release.)

There are 3 games that I make sure are installed on every computer I own; The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Rise of the Triad and Carmageddon 2: Carpcalypse Now.

Morrowind, because it's my favourite RPG ever. Rise of the Triad, because it's hilarious, has great enemies, an awesome weapon set and loads of secrets to find. Carmageddon 2, because running people over and destroying cars to the sounds of Iron Maiden never gets old ;)

Hell yes, this is by far the best game for MSX. I absolutely love it!

Say, have you ever managed to clear it? On my best run I got halfway back to the castle; after that things get really out of control, especially on the stages you need a map to complete.
If not then yes, completed it dozens of times.
Always feeling sad when I got the "bad" ending.
(remember to Pause the game only 1 time and no more or less to get the good one)

If really can't get further and want to anyway: type "noriko" on the level select screen. You'll get the option to continue on the game over screen.
"Kazumi" will also work but contrary to noriko makes you lose all your items and thus makes the game a lot more difficult.
The game is perfectly doable without cheats though... so why don't you try hard!? ;)

Legend of Zelda - Enjoyable to trudge through to this day.
Doom (Ultimate, II, and Final) - Sometimes I feel like going back to the simpler days of First-Person Shooters.
San Francisco Rush 2049 - Instant classic of an arcade racer. The extra modes in the console versions help.
Thunder Force III - Easy as it is, I can just pop it in and enjoy it from start to finish anyway.
Descent I & II - For my Six Degrees of Freedom fix.
Freespace 1 & 2 - For my space combat fix, supplied by FreeSpace Open. And those explosions still look good.
Nectaris series - When I want to play a turn-based strategy that isn't in the Wars series.
System Shock 2 - One of the few FPSs with an atmosphere that can genuinely creep me out.
Wipeout XL - Every part of this game works so well together, it's exhilarating to play.

Off the top of my head.

I was going to ask the same. Indeed after level 12 the game gets extremely manic.

Edit: I once made a poll among MSX users, like our annual top 25 shmups, to vote for the best MSX game, and Penguin Adventure got the 1st spot, with Space Manbow on 2nd, Aleste 2 on 3rd and Metal Gear 2 at 4th.

I guess I was on a roll those days. 1 lifing Salamander MSX and destroying this game many times over. :P

Too bad I can't get near a 1cc on about any modern shmup though... :(

The voters had great taste, but Salamander and Nemesis2 are top 5 material too!

Penguin adventure is MSX's defining game though imho.
Cream of the crop.

Maze of Galious would be in my top 5 for sure too btw.l

Maze of Galious was top 10, don't remember the exact spot though.

1cc Salamander is also insane, the MSX version is utterly difficulty.

I never saw the good ending of Penguin Adventure on a real MSX, only on videos, heh.

A game I used to play a lot on the past was Aleste 2, I've finished it like 50 times... but I haven't played it for ages now. Nowadays there's no certain old game I always come back from time to time, though I always play some old games from time to time :D

I haven't played SF2 in years. Super Turbo and CE, yes, but not SF2. I do always come back to it, but only with other players; it's just not very fun for solo play.

I was about to be deeply offended and say something snarky in response to that, but then I'd have felt stupid: I was thinking of Andro Dunos when you clearly wrote Alpha Mission II. Big difference between those two.

For my part, on topic, my biggest old game to return to is Viewpoint for the Neo-Geo. That's the *only* version that will satisfy me, period. And satisfy me it does. Not bad for a game that's now well over 15 years old.

Other than that, it's hard to classify a game from 1999 as "old", but I'm still quite partial to the arcade experience of Crisis Zone. And yes: I still 1CC it every time I play it, but amazingly, I still have fun every stinking time. Sign of a classic, or, at the very least, a game where they got the gameplay right.

As i mentioned in a previous thread a week or so ago - Top Hunter. Decent little game on the Geo. Once a year or so i give it a playthrough. 1944: The Loop Master even more so.

Is that youtube a playthrough of the game? I think 10 minutes to finish it is pretty impressive.

I know this game has some fans, but I guess its just nostalgia indeed. I always found it to be horribly crap. Of course, half of the time I was just wandering without any idea of what the heck I was supposed to do :)

There are two arcades nearby my workplace, and SF2CE still is one of the most played cabs in both of them. The bigger one even has 2 cabs with SF2CE, but the bigger competition, for some reason, stays on the smaller one (The place is so small and fitted with so many cabs, you barely can walk around, and people even smoke inside there, it makes the atmosphere really... horrible).

Most of my gaming is going back to old games. To pick just one:

Kirby Pinball Land

If Shiki 2 is old enough, then that's my pick.
