R.I.P. George Carlin

Post by jp »

"LOS ANGELES - Comedian George Carlin, a counter-culture hero famed for his routines about drugs and dirty words, died of heart failure at a Los Angeles-area hospital Sunday, a spokesman said. He was was 71.

Carlin, who had a history of heart problems, died at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica about 6 p.m. PT after being admitted earlier in the afternoon for chest pains, spokesman Jeff Abraham told Reuters.

Known for his edgy, provocative material, Carlin achieved status as an anti-Establishment icon in the 1970s with stand-up bits full of drug references and a routine about seven dirty words you could not say on television. A regulatory battle over a radio broadcast of his "Filthy Words" routine ultimately reached the U.S. Supreme Court. "

Fuck, that sucks. The last stand-up I saw of his was just a year ago and he was noticeably aged, but still...this is probably the first celebrity death that I actually give a shit about.

Well this is a Mongolian Cluster Fuck™ of a day for the comedic world. While his last two specials were pretty hit and miss for me, I laughed a lot at his other specials over the years. His material was controversial, witty, sarcastic, dirty, insightful at times, and every couple of years, he wrapped it up in 60 minute pieces. He's been a staple in the comedy world for decades, and was someone you expected to always be there because he'd been in the spotlight for so long. But sadly, he's not around anymore.

Rest in peace George, and thanks for the many laughs you've given me over the years.

I've never been a big fan of "dirty" comedians, but some of Carlin's insights were still well worth hearing (to the point where my dad, even less of a fan of his style than I am, shows some of his routine on "doublespeak" to his Speech classes). One can only hope that someone was listening as well as laughing over the years.

I hate that only one day ago, I was talking to someone about how sharp all of George Carlin's comedy was. His stand-ups didn't just make you laugh, they made you think as well. Any comic that can do that well should get major respect.

He's legendary and will certainly be missed.

A talented man who's act unfortunately paved the way for a bunch of unfunny hacks.

That sucks  I got to see him perform at Michigan State University with a buddy of mine like 3 years ago. He had to use a few 3 x 5 cards to help him remember segues and certain parts of bits, but his jokes and his insights were still as funny as they were back in the day.

I can only hope that people who quote George Carlin can now finally overtake all those tools who insist on spamming us with weakass Bill Hicks routines.

It's the only good thing that can come of this.

Fuck you. From now one, you'll be spammed with both Carlin and Hicks, with some Pryor and Bruce added for a great measure.

If you're going to spam Hicks, you might as well throw in some of your best Austin Powers impersonations. Also mess up the Hicks quotes to make it a perfect hell.
