That one old game you keep going back to......
No matter how many games you have or what shiny new bumpmap rendering hardware is out there, there's that ONE old game you keep going back to. So, what it for you guys?
For me, it's Super Mario Bros 3, followed closely by Earthbound. My M3 Real for the DS lets me play these classics on the go!

If I can name only 1:
Penguin Adventure on the MSX.
Hideo Kojima's first game iirc and certainly his best.
Also my first and only lasting true love.
The river stages music is the best tune ever in a video game too.
*edit* here'sa link to a youtube vid of the first 4 stages.
River section is the 4th and last one in this vid.
I'd want to marry this game if it was a woman.

Gradius Gaiden - finished it like 30 time by the time I finished counting.
Mega Man X - I used to play this on a daily basis for more than a year. I never kept count, but I figure I must have finished it at least a gazillion times (not counting MHX.)
Resident Evil 4 - Not exactly old but I've beat it at least 6 times.

Final Fantasy 8, definetly.
Some parts give me so much inspiration and nice feelings, that i always fall back to boot it again.
Another one is Conkers Bad Fur Day.
Dont have a game with so much memories than this one.
Multiplayer madness, laugh attacks, big weekend sessions and stuff.
Ah well, memories

MDK and Wario Land I guess ~!

MDK : A very original game with great style, atmosphere and level design. I usually play through it again every year or so. Definitely recommended ;]
Wario Land : Great platforming game, quite original, lots of secrets, cool level design... it's my favorite game boy game I guess.

Emulated games are always short of giving the full experience as meant to be.PROMETHEUS wrote:how about playing it with an emulator ? ~FIL wrote:I wish I could play the old gameboy version without having to dig up my old gameboy.
If I still had the gameboy to hand, that is the old game I would keep coming back to.
Original over emulation always.
And since this game defines the GB, I'd say even more reason to skip emulation.

I love you, Prome. :)
Shiny was one of my favorite devs back in the day, I still like MDK and both Earthworm Jim games.
Beside that, I always return to Diablo, Heroes of Might & Magic 2, and ADoM. Played them to death, yet still return every now and then. Although I guess there are more games like that, I'm just too lazy to list them.

I don't know what you mean, playing Wario Land on my emulator is a better experience than it was on the original Gameboy. The only thing you're losing is portability, but you got access to some cool control options or display options and save states and shit. They're not really that important, but other than that the game is totally identical to the original with better sound so I'd say emulation over original here. Like in many other cases, I'm thinking STGs! Yeah, MAME > PCB, everything runs perfectly, you can record your games easily, you can make saves states and snapshots... Some games aren't emulated so well, but for the others the experience is just better on emulation. And that's why I'll wait until Mushi futari is released on MAME in 20 years to play it :pSuper Laydock wrote:Emulated games are always short of giving the full experience as meant to be.

eheh yeah I love Diablo too, can't stop listening to that Tristram track. This game has high grade atmosphere. I don't think I can enjoy the combats and farming much anymore though.moozooh wrote:

Got to go with Andi on this one. It was the first RPG I ever played and I played it when it came out for the NES. First time I skipped school was to play it as well.Andi wrote:Final Fantasy 1 - I've beat that game about 20 times. I've beat it a party of all black mages, a party of all white mages, and just about every other stupid combination you can think of.
Crystal Castles in the arcade as well. Way challenging and too fun.
Blast Wind.
There are others. But I actually play through Blast Wind multiple times every month (sometimes several times).
I love that game.
Other than that there's... Batsugun, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Hyper Duel, and Radiant Silvergun.
But Blast Wind definitely has all those beat for me. And I STILL haven't broken 5mill in it.
... so close that one time.

RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!!!!!!
Mario Land (GB). Yeah, it´s Mario, but very different from all the other titles. What´s funny is that the end boss is my first shmup experience EVER, and the first time I remember being "in the zone". First game I ever completed, too.
Nowadays I find it pretty easy and short, so it´s nice to complete it once on a rainy day within half an hour or so. It also has a SECOND LOOP!
