Manliest moments of fiction (video games or otherwise)

Post by Ed Oscuro »

So post your favorite moments, be they cutscenes from games or movie clips or whatever.

The ones that come to my mind right now:

4.) Bullit - car chase of awesome (no link, too lazy), putting this one in here ahead of anything from The Negotiator, which I saw right after this one.

3.) Highly improbable, but the gunship strafing scene from Apocalypse Now. Possibly the napalm scene with Robert Duvall as well.

2.) Ninja Gaiden's "Escape From Crisis" Cutscene (4:11 in and on to the end of the clip)

1.) Leon taking the Voight-Kampff test at the beginning of Blade Runner

Awesome for bringing the Killer7 clips, thanks :D

It's Harman though, with an A...Harman...Smith. Yeah, right.

The first clip is great because they remembered to shoot the Angel first :D

No problem; I think the director was a bit confusing about the Smiths anyway. Anybody else read the translation of Hand in Killer7?

A bit off-topic, but...I've heard about Killer 7 before, but never bothered to look it up until I saw those videos. Looks very interesting.

Is it worth playing?

Abso-fucking-lutely. The greatest politically incorrect surreal clusterfuck that you can find in the form of a game.

I think it has the best story of any video game ever, if you want to play a game just for story get it. but if you want more you'd have to like very basic get this and bring it over there puzzles. I found the shooting portions of the game to be real tight and fun, others hated them. Picture Hotd where you have to move around and aim with a joystick. Also you have to be really into the aesthuetics of the game because you'll spend a very good amount of time staring at pretty hallways in between the shooting and puzzle portions. Boss fight are brilliant no one I've talked to argues that they are not. The game is very easy but if you want a challenge stick it through the easy normal mode and wait for Killer8 mode which is godly hard, it will be worth it.

Hope that helps. :D

No More Heroes, the next game from director Goichi Suda, elicits mixed responses as well, but he has many more projects in the pipeline, apparently including games set in the Snatcher universe.

I saw screenshots a while ago of some B&W brawler with detailed city streets and the only color being the red of blood, and I thought it was attributed to him - can't find any info on it again, sadly.

The entirety of the original Fist of the North Star / Hokuto no Ken manga. The various anime versions, overall, don't quite compare.

The original anime series is worth a watch for it's hilarious 80's bodybuilder worship, overblown melodrama and unintentional homo erotica. It's the Japanese splatterpunk version of He-Man!

Mucho macho violence / nudity / monsters

Edit: fixed. Kinda came out but I 100% do not condone rape.

You certainly mean MadWorld, but AFAIK, Suda is not related to that one at all.

Yeah, the two HNK anime series are... well, they're fun. The "BWAHHH!" voice acting always brings a smile to my face. And when they just reproduce the manga's key scenes they're mostly okay. But the manga is so understated and efficient (even ignoring filler) by comparison, it's like shearing a ton of outlandish fluff and blaring mock-violence off of a simple, often sad story with a lot of brutal action.

I do think the first anime series had some very nice tunes, though. The first animated movie (1986) is also a fun splatterfest (with no milky "blood!") even if it's pretty devoid of story.

Anime:
1. Charge!! Otokojuku: "We don't need women at Otokojuku!" and other such hilarity.
2. Bastard!!: all of it. Almost all the male characters drip with masculinity.

And of course, Commando. That movie is made of biceps and awesome snappy comebacks.

In fact, Commando would outman Predator any day.

Proof.

Indeed, Shuu teaches other fictional characters how to die like men. ;-; Toki vs Raoh was handled perfectly too.

Also, major spoilers for Heat (1995), "I gotta be a man, I can't let it slide"

Sorry for off-topic, but you seem to say this as if raping women is a macho manly thing that cool macho men do. I disapprove. Women must be treated with respect and dignity!

Gut's, the main hero of Berserk is raped when he's a boy. He naturally has issues with it, so rapist humans and demons tend to die brutally by his sword, thus making him more macho. There's more to it than just that though.
Go read Berserk, now!
