Help me find an RTS...

Post by dave4shmups »

After college, one of the guys I was living with was obsessed with this RTS, and I can't remember the name, but it wasn't futuristic (like Universe At War Earth Assault), and you had to build an "idol" or religious temple of some kind (like a cathedral, for example) to advance. I can't remember what the game called it, though.

Just sounds like Age of Empires to me.

If it helps, he was playing it in early 2002, so nothing later then that. EDIT, after checking Mobygames.com, it's gotta be Age of Empires-I just don't know which one.

It's this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_Emp ... e_of_Kings You have to build a wonder to win. I should get this, I loved watching him play it, and I'm sure it would run on our PC. :D

How's the DS Age of Kings?

It's actually pretty good, but it really should be played on PC. I hate gaming on my PC but I make an exception for this (+Settlers/Rise of Nations). If you can run it, Age of Mythologies is the best of the Ages series IMO.

it's a pretty fun game, I couldn't be arsed to play it alone anymore but if you're not so used to playing RTS maybe you could still enjoy that. The more interesting part of the game is playing competitively against someone (1vs1), like all RTS. Then it turns into a fairly smart game that takes pretty serious macro skills : you have to be really really fast at running an optimized economy and production and getting your attacks on the move and your defenses set up. There's not a whole lot of strategy involved compared to some other RTS's but you'll have a good time nonetheless, I know I did.

DS version not recommended, you're losing 95% of your control speed without a mouse + keyboard and that's nearly 95% of what makes the game interesting. What's hard and good about it is that you have to be able to understand and run a complex situation very fast. When the game gets slow and you're just struggling to use your awful controls as fast as possible because they don't enable you to play fast enough, there's not quite as much skill involved anymore.
