Worst old games by the biggest developers??

Post by nimitz »

Ok, I was wondering which of the old japanese video game giants has produce the highest amount of crap or the ones that maintained a cetain level of quality through the years.

So, the question is

What is the worst game of each of these companies in the 1985-1995 period

(All platforms)

Konami = ?
Capcom = ?
Taito = ?
Nintendo = ?
Sega = ?
Namco = ?

It'll be tough to pick just 1 from Taito, they've made some real stinkers. (Don't cry though Taito, I still love you)

They're all guilty of some atrocities to some degree or another. Konami released some shite in the early 32-bit era.

Konami = Thunder Cross (Do I even need to explain myself)
Capcom = Street Fighter II'/Super Street Fighter II (There is no excuse to make 5 games within 4 years when you could have dealt with 3)
Taito = Wrath of the Black Manta (I know they didn't make it, which is exactly why they didn't need to remove that eye level; like the new style/music though)
Nintendo = BS games (Why did you leave us out, Nintendo)
Sega = ?
Namco = ?

I tell you again: it boggles the mind it does, trying to think of a game I "hate".

don't be shy, give some ideas!

I'll start

Taito = Rastan saga 2?

Nintendo = Mario's time machine?

Sega = Michael Jackson's Moonwalker?

Konami = Galactic Warriors?

Namco = no idea

Also please choose games based on how bad they are compared to the competition and not because you don't like the concept.

Mario's Time Machine doesn't count.

For Nintendo I'd say Radarscope. They've done a really good job of making sure everyone forgot about that game.

Youre right about Mario's Time machine not counting.

but Radarscope doesn't count either (released in 1980) and I don't think that any 1980's game can be considered "bad" as long as it works it's amazing on its own.

Taito-Aqua Jack
Namco-(i'm not big on Rolling Thunder or Centipede but they're still good games)
Nintendo-Mario's Missing
Sega-?
Data East-Karnov's Revenge(Everything else is awesome)
Konami-?

Konami = Martial Champion
Capcom = 1943 - apart from that didn't really produce any major turds between 85 and 95
Taito = Rastan Saga 2
Nintendo = the Virtual Boy + select games
Sega = Osomatsu-kun
Namco = Wonder Momo

Actually, if I had to pick a Data East game, I might go with Fighter's History, if only for the sheer ripoff factor of the whole thing.

And Mario is Missing wasn't actually produced by Nintendo, it was made by Software Toolworks.

And if we're adding to the list, how about SNK? The 1985-1995 era covers a good chunk of the early NeoGeo stuff (Magician Lord comes to mind for that.) Atari could go on the list as well, since they put out some pretty atrocious stuff during this period (I might go with Pit Fighter as a suggestion.)

Also for Sega, what about Time Traveler? Excessively gimmicky hardware searching for some semblance of a game.

Fighters' History is extremely playable and much more refined and polished than people give it credit. And I don't see how it's any more a rip-off than Fatal Fury 2, Martial Masters or Kaiser Knuckle. Everybody was equally guilty of jumping on the SF2 bandwagon back then, and Fighters' History is one of the few games not by Capcom or SNK that actually turned out well.

I believe Centipede was either Williams, or Atari's love child, made by a female, nice twitch game though, especially in later levels.

Can't dodge anything with the boat and the slight Auto-aim doesn't seem to work well.

Agreed - Rolling Thunder is terrific, and I really don't like people rubbishing the Virtual Boy. It wasn't portable, and for that it's a fail - but some of the software is fantastic fun. A real oddity, but with plenty of unique stuff!

I like some of Konami's 32-bit era stuff, Gungage is lousy in many ways but still holds my attention for a while whenever I can get it working; SotN doesn't hold my attention much at all. I'd elaborate on the reasons except for fear of looking like an idiot, so I'll hold off for now ;)

Speaking of 32-bit era games, somebody keeps dropping these trilogy collection PC game boxes at my local thrift, it's hilarious. I passed on the last one (some westwood collection which includes Blade Runner, except their copy was all beat up and missing Blade Runner, so I eBay'd it instead), and this one has Eye of the Beholder III, which I've read isn't as good as the originals. Maybe I've played it a bit years ago because I already had the game on the Silver Anniversary pack. This pack also had the King's Quest (VI I think) with the ridiculous subtitle "Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow," which I ALSO already had and also don't really care much about. I'm trying to remember what the third game was.

On the plus side, I got Pac-In-Time in a rerelease box. WOOHOO

And an official SD-to-floppy (!!) converter which is probably the most useful of the things I got by far.

Nooooo, Centipede was made by Ed Logg, and you shouldn't forget it! ;)

Donna Bailey (I think that's her name) got credited for some early design work but it seems it was pretty rubbish and all that matters was done by Logg (with possibly some help from another designer? I forget) anyway.

Not that it's horrible or anything. It wouldn't even rank on my top 50 worst games of all time.

Aqua Jack?

If I were putting out a top 50 worst games, it'd be filled with Pac/Amidar clones and whatever before I even thought about Aqua Jack. :(

I haven't put a lot of time into AJ, however, and I'm glad to be reminded to take another look at it. I agree with your reservations though, the boat did seem unwieldy and the targeting sucks.

Actually, my biggest complaint with the game is the same complaint I have for many, many games: Could've used two joysticks, or maybe foot pedals + lightgun, or something.

p.s. nobody mentioned Martial Champion yet. And I saw some crazy porn of one of the characters years ago O_o

Konami = Haunted Castle
Capcom = Street Fighter
Taito = Rastan Saga 2 ;)
Nintendo = Pretty good all around, though I always though Urban Champion was pretty shit. Game appears to have been released Nov '84 though.
Sega = Loads, I'll just list Alex Kidd : High Tech World as a huge disappointment.
Namco = Samurai Ghost

Some of these games probably aren't the 'worst' (Haunted Castle, Street Fighter, Rastan Saga 2), but are notable for being really bad compared to their respective series.

No Samurai Ghost love? :(

I mean, that whole big/large mode idea was a really exceptional use of the limited ROM space. Game controls like a charm too

SNK, responsible for a few stinkers, but the award goes to Ghost Pilots.

Urgh.

So much promise, such a retarded...everything. Including the first boss. SNK loves flamethrower enemies because they're easier than bullet patterns.

Those people sux and are banished to Bizarro World. (LGB is only thinking of Wrath of the Black Manta because somebody selected it over @ 2D Gaming; it's only a Taito-distributed game outside Japan, anyway; inside Japan they had nothing to do with it)
