Any cool action games on MAME that i'm missing?

Post by evil_ash_xero »

After playing Osman and Shock Troopers, I was wondering if there are any other cool action titles to download on MAME?

Now, keep in mind, I would prefer post 95 or 96 games. Something that the SNES couldn't handle, OK?

Run N' Gun is cool, as is any other type of 2D action game. And i've played the Metal Slugs, of course.

Some I can think of:

- In the Hunt
- Strider 1 and 2
- Dungeons and Dragons (Tower of Doom and Shadow over Mystara)
- Gaiapolis
- Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder
- Alien vs. Predator

Nitro Ball, which has had a lot of discussion lately. Gundhara is pretty cool too. Both are overhead run 'n' guns.

Macaw was nice enough to dig up Dyna Gear by a now non-existent group within Sammy. I dare someone to find a better, unheard of action game.

Outfoxies! I think it's a bit older than the timframe you're specifying, but it rocks hard nonetheless, especially as a multiplayer game.

I saw pics of this aeons ago and had my eye out for the PCB and it is hard to find (at least in my experience).

I was goofing around w/ Specineff on ye ol' XBOX the other day and showed him a bit of it.

The art looks vaguely familiar... did these artists do any other noteworthy work for another company?

Give Irem's 1993 Ninja Baseball Bat Man a shot on Mame/Mame32 -- it's based on Irem's classic In the Hunt PCB board setup... ^_~

Irem saw what Red/Hudson Soft could do with it's Hu-Card shmup title of Air Zonk/Genjin Zonk and decided that a 2-D detailed brawler would be a good way to show off some wild and wacky gameplay included in this Ninja Baseball Bat Man arcade game premise...

Yes, UPL I think. It's a great game, Dyna Gear, the definition of hidden gem.

Charlie Ninja is a must. Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon is a must. I've heard Night Slashers is a cool Konami beat'emup.

I just set up Ninja Baseball Bat Man last weekend.

Now I HATE fighting games cuz I cant stand all the yipping & yapping & jumping all over. It just aint my thang!

Having said that, NBBM is, for the moment, kinda cool. But I dont expect that to last.

Give me a SHUMP anytime... :P

Wizard Fire/Dark Seal - Isometric dungeon-crawls.

FixEight - Everyone rags on it, but it's Mame, and the characters are varied.

Gundhara - Good vertically-scrolling action/shooter.

Arabian Magic - Well...I liked it. Beat-em-up.

Nightmare in the Dark - Puzzle/Action with evil theme (my favorite).

Elevator Action 2 - No intro necessary.

fuuuck I made an epic post a few years ago about Contra clones and the like, but a lot of the good ones have been mentioned already.

The problem with FixEight in MAME is that it's a bootleg with crap sound. I'm not sure I consider it an improvement to OutZone, but some will appreciate the shot type change pads instead of C items.

Night Slashers is Data East, actually, fits in with their other DECO32 games that have epic music like Nitro Ball, Edward Randy, and Dragon Gun (which is one of the best Space Harrier-style games IMO).

RUN-N-GUN:

Biomechanical Toy
Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa (Konami, saw this one in real life but never played it unfortunately, was before I knew what it was.
SPY - Super Project Y - I actually hate this game but it should be checked out; it has a mix of run 'n' gun, brawling, and Space Harrier-style sequences

VERTICAL "SHOOTER" W/out autoscrolling
OutZone (Toaplan)
Jackal / Top Gunner (Konami, also on FDS and NES, NES got the better version)
Juno First (I think it's classified a shmup here though, or at least it should be)
SAR - Search and Rescue (kinda broken SNK game, but all should at least try it)
Guerrilla War / TNK - two more SNK games of this type
Ninja Emaki - old favorite of mine

INTO-THE-SCREEN:
Devastators (highly underrated imo) Konami
G.I. Joe (same type of game) Konami

I'm going to leave alone brawlers and Castlevania-style games 'cuz there's a ton of them that are good (Combatribes, Sengoku 2, etc.)

Taito and Irem have a lot of great unknown action games.

also check out the system 16 museums, LOTS of great stuff to discover there, all sorted by hardware in chronological order: http://www.system16.com/museum.php?id=5

here are a few examples of some great arcade "systems" at Sytem 16

Konami Xexex hardware

Taito Z system

Taito F3

Irem M92 (check this one out)

Namco System 2

MAME is much bigger than one may think...

Good lord, Konami sure had a tendency to use garish colors back in the 90s.

Agreed - Rastan Saga 2 should be added to the UN's list of crimes against humanity, and Taito should be tried in the Hague for inflicting this abomination upon mankind.

Especially when you compare it to Rastan (the first one).

Which is a classic.

It's not made post 95 but Shadowland is good for that special Japanese atmosphere, as is Bonze Adventure. They are both platform games with a bit of shooting. I guess they are fairly well known.

Off Topic: I'm going to do a 'write up' on single-screen platformers playable in Mame for 2dgaming.net soon, which I hope some of you will enjoy. I'm writing it here so that I don't forget it.
It is powerup of laser.

Top Hunter is a pretty cool little game. I usually give it a play through once a year or so.
