R.I.P. Stan Winston

Post by Jon »

It looks like the special effects guru passed away at his home this Sunday at 62. Thanks for the memories! Aliens will always be one of my personal favs.

And no more new Terminator effects from the master of special EFX...

I recall that Stan Winston did the special effects for the 3-D sci-fi/horror film of "The Parasite" with Demi Moore in her first starring role... ^_~

That really sucks. I guess EVERYTHING will be CGI from now on.

You can bet it will be CGI...Stan Winston was a master of real-time puppetry, stop-motion effects, radio-controlled models, wire-guided models, etc. All these different effects were used in the first two Terminator films, btw. He was a jack-of-all-trades when it came to his own special effects company...

His very last film was the 1981 fanasty film known as Clash of The Titans -- awesome usage of stop-motion effects from master stop-motion pioneer/master Mr. Harryhausen himself. ^_~

Yup, Jaffe's first source of inspiration when making God of War, iirc.

Yeah Clash of the Titans is cheesy old school fun. I used to watch it with my dad all the time as a wee one. I loved that damned mechanical owl and the scene where the evil guy stabs the bag with Medusas head in it and the blood turns into giant scorpions.

I could have sworn I read somewhere that there was plans to remake this...

The guy responsible for creating my combat alloy endo-skeleton has passed. He will be sorely missed. RIP

Isn't Jon Dykstra still alive? Or is he more into computers and stuff?

Memetic poly alloy, too?

Hey, did this he also do the creatures for the AVP movie? I thought those were pretty amazing w/o CG.

Predator, Aliens, Terminator all immediately come to mind when I think of Stan Winston. The guy was a legend, and sci-fi/horror films will not be the same without him.

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!

I can't live in a world where film is confined to disgusting excesses of computer graphics, and coming from a games collector, that really means something.

So long Stan, thanks for everything...
