four accents dead in Ohio
NW Ohio accent is almost nonexistent, I would extend that to northerly suburbs of Columbus too. Detroit talk doesn't really reach Ohio.
NE Ohio accent is thick and chewy, but disappearing like lower-class Baltimorean. SE Ohio is charmless twang. In the SW, there are differences even between Cincy and Dayton but they're also disappearing and becoming more like Columbus talk.
I would argue that coastal Virginian has a few more archaically English characteristics than Appalachian, which is influenced by Scottish/Irish immigration too.

Really? I grew up in NE Ohio and have lived in NW Ohio for several years, and I haven't really noticed any difference. Although most people I met in college were from NE Ohio, so that's probably a big part of it.trivial wrote:NW Ohio accent is almost nonexistent, I would extend that to northerly suburbs of Columbus too. But I've gone shopping for hours in Toledo and Lima without noticing any accent I could detect; certainly not a Cleveland accent.Davey wrote:I grew up in NE Ohio and have lived in NW Ohio for several years, and I haven't really noticed any difference. Education has a lot to do with it. There are all kinds of people from NE Ohio at OU and they don't talk the way I associate with Cleveland. If Cleveland sounds neutral to you, I don't know what to say.
