Of course. The 3d equivalent would be ITG. :)

You sure your not thinking of Gun RangerX? In my book a Bangaioh/Target Earth style game would never be considered a shmup. No Auto scroll or automatically attacking enemies no dice.

I doubt that would even make most people's top 10 beat 'em ups list. Not that I'm a beat 'em up connoisseur or anything.

How could I forget Robotron 2084? I'm soo stupid. My list needs revising
Fuck yes it does. You have Primal Rage in the number one spot!

This is near impossible (10 isn't enough scope) but a good thread nonetheless so I'll have a go. In no particular order:

Assault Suits Valken (SFC)
Streets of Rage 2 (MD)
Secret of Mana (SFC)
Super Mario World (SFC)
Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past (SFC)
Aliens (Arcade)
King of Fighters 98 (Arcade)
Ketsui (Arcade)
Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening (GB)
Castlevania IV (SFC)

And my god, that's an impossible list to make, cos there's a gazillion others too. Funny how the really nostalgic ones that remind you of a happy time and place are the fastest to leap to memory though.

It's an awesome game - I'm with you big time! :D

(And crap, I forgot Rocket Knight Adventures - too many to choose from!) :?

It is extremely hard to choose so few games among so many deserving choices. Not sure this is totally accurate, but the top three are definitely in their right places.

Excluding shmups:

10. The Legend of Zelda (NES)

9. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PSX)

8. Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike (ARC)

7. Odin Sphere (PS2)

6. Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin (NDS)

5. Final Fantasy IV (SNES)

4. Super Metroid (SNES)

3. Doukutsu Monogatari (PC/FREEWARE)

2. Chrono Trigger (SNES)

1. Final Fantasy VI (SNES)

Sorry that my opinion doesn't match the general consensus.

It's not a terrible game or anything, it just seems like an odd choice for the top 10 2D games ever. I haven't played it in ages, but what I remember most are those god-awful platform sections.

Sorry if I sounded harsh. I just find it odd that their's always a set few games that are considered great. I just pick them as I see them.

The plateforming portions are what make it really challenging, Supreme master up till the final boss would be a cake walk without those up till the final boss(BTW I 1lC it on SM recently). I look at that as hard but fair, unlike the first level of BattleToads in Battlemaniacs. Which is the easiest level but the most unfair. I don't mind dying when I'm not fast enough or precise enough, but weird collision gets me steamed.

You have Good taste Sky Kid :)

In no particular order not including shoot 'em ups and the Super Mario series.

River City Ransom (NES)
Tetris (NES/GB)
Kid Icarus (NES)
Legend of Zelda (NES)
Legend of Zelda - A Link to the Past (SNES)
Final Fantasy 6 (SNES)
Chrono Trigger (SNES)
Super Mario RPG - Legend of the Seven Stars (SNES)
Donkey Kong Country (SNES)
Mega Man X (SNES)

It's so hard to pick just 10 games considering most of the best games ever made are in 2D.

07. GrimGrimoire
06. Mario Bros.
05. Yoshi's Island
04. Final Fantasy V

I'd like to think so. :D
I just remember playing DD2: TR with a friend relentlessly on the NES (until his Mum came in at 4am telling us to go to sleep.)
It was pretty inventive (kicking people out of that Helicopter door was great), and it got super challenging. The disappearing platform routine toward the end was a killer, but I just remember the difficulty spike was nutty when you had to fight silver versions of yourselves (I think?) and then all the bosses.
Fantastic 2 player game.

Yeah - and our relative geographical proximity. I'm sure Amiga Power, One For Amiga, and CVG (The original print version) are as responsible for my choices as my own brain!

No, take a look yourself. That was actually how I discovered it:
Key shooters on the Megadrive must include the seminal Thunderforce series, Aeroblasters and Ranger X, and to a lesser extent, Steel Empire, Gynoug and Hellfire.
