Next Big Thing In Gaming

Post by Phil12 »

Well, In the past 30 years, We've gone from playing games like Pac Man and Tetris to games like Gears of War and Metal Gear Solid. What do you guys think we'll see in another 30 years?

Is that back to the future 2, or am I thinking the wrong thing here?

This brain mouse just came out recently
http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews.php? ... _the_log/1

It allows you to control games with your mind. The tech is in its infancy right now but it seems like it has potential.

Honestly I'm just impressed with hooking up a motion sensor controller to the ps2 and playing mercury meltdown with it :-D Can't wait to get a wii one day and try kororinpara or whatever that thing is. I love ball rolling games :)

You know, I've been thinking about things used via the mind, and i don't know if it's such a good idea. How often would our web browsers go straight to porn?

God knows I'm eagerly awaiting the Brainstation, but before that comes out, Nintendo will probably unearth another failed peripheral and make it a success.

I think it was called Crack Shot. I love the way the wild west video game foreshadowed the theme of the third movie.

Sounds similar to "Digiscents" which was highly anticipated but an utter failture
http://digiscents.com/blog/

Basically, there would be a "smell box" full of chemicals hooked up to your computer, that when mixed in certain combinations would make a variety of scents. I guess the primary purpose was for shopping (smell different perfumes online), but I thought it would be awesome for gaming. Imagine, each area has a different scent. It would bring a new layer of recognition and memory recall.
I found the idea fascinating, but apparently not very many other people did

I'm more interested in content than in interfaces, personally (although I think that VR is something that should really happen in consumer-land, like, now). Someone ... might have been here ... made a comment a while ago about how 30 years is about the span from the commercial viability of movies to the release of Citizen Kane, so perhaps we will be seeing our own Citizen Kane sometime soon? It seems unlikely, but people are thinking about games in ever more sophisticated ways, and they are beginning to enter 'high' culture, so I think (hope) things will get interesting soon.

Here's a thought about the impact games are having on the culture: I do work part time at a contemporary art museum which features an 'open shelf' where the artists whose work is being exhibited can select books, music etc. for inclusion. One of the artists recently included a bunch of PC games such as Starcraft and so forth. Pretty keen.

Send Nintendo an email and consider it done. They are on a crusade to revive EVERY failed peripheral.

I like the old-timey future when everybody has bare CRT's piled and strewn about. What I like to call a futurfetisch where being bent over a live CRT is how folk get their jollies. We salute you.

In near future, I think procedural content could be next big thing. Maybe Spore will start it, and maybe not.

In distant future - Procedurally generated games in combination with brainmouse-like interface. It could measure if player likes whatever the game is doing and change accordingly. Or, if it's a shmup, spawn tougher enemies whenever player isn't frustrated enough

I love how these hats don´t actually protect you from sunlight or anything because it´s the future, and in the future things don´t have to make sense if it only looks futuristic.

1. VR in some form. All the FPS's are intrinsicly boring, but even the worst FPS would be super cool to play in a working, immersive VR. I know this because I've played Quake II in a 6-sided virtual reality cube with a 3d-controller and stereo goggles that made the game graphics appear as holograms.

2. Huge advances in AI. Games will be populated with dynamic virtual actors, with whom the player has discussions and needs to have social skills to advance.
Before Pope John Paul died he decreed that Aliens were also GOD's creatures and we should treat them with respect.

Now that you've brought them to my attention I really want one of those hats.

Isn't Stereoscopic 3D meant to be the next big thing? Ubisoft are already working on something...
