Back during the VR fad of the mid-90s, I played a VR version of Rise of the Triad at an arcade. The player would stand in a circle that detected their rotation, hold a one-handed stick with buttons on it, and of course wear a VR headset. You played for a preset amount of time regardless of how many times you died.
Anyway, it wouldn't surprise me if the same hardware was used with Doom.
I was just about to mention Grosse Point Blank, heh.
We here shall not rest until we have made a drawing-room of your shaft, and if you do not all finally go down to your doom in patent-leather shoes, then you shall not go at all.
I do recall of a FPS arcade cab prototype that was shown at the 2nd annual California Extreme show back in 1998 -- Quake arcade game proto with trackball and push button setup. It was never released to arcades though...

PC Engine Fan X! ^_~
i had seen that exact cabinet selling on ebay a few months back. unless there are more quake cabinets. the seller claimed to be part of the arcade port project.
I remember playing the thing. It was basically totally unplayable. It was a real letdown too, because it cost a lot of cash to try out compared to other arcade machines. I think I remember quitting and leaving the area before I had even used up the full time I had paid for.
