Gosh, what the hell drive people to do stuff like this. If I was so "tired of life," I'd drive the knife through my neck.

Yeah, you'd think he'd commit seppukku and go down like a man. But no, he has to go and take innocent game players with him. I hope they chop his testicles off, with a dull, rusty hatchet.

Crazy. If he lacked that much self-faith, he'd have been better off removing himself from the world instead of stabbing innocent people that did nothing to him.

Most suicide (in Japan) isn't. The train would be the one that is, but I believe it's more for convenience (for the jumper, obviously) than wow factor of doing it in public.

In fact, since the latest fashion in suicide puts others in the immediate area at risk, many groups will take a tent out in the woods to inhale their cocktail of poisonous fumes, and of course, leave a note on the tent door warning any would be intruders.

I guess you will run amok not because you lost your will to live but because you hate people. I bet there are a lots of misanthrope people out there, and once they decided that everything in their live is fucked up they decide to "get back" on society (or whatever). I think the suicide part in most killing sprees just comes from the insight that after killing many people your life wouldn´t head in any favorable direction anymore :?

lol, he was a Tales of Destiny fan... even had a Leon drawing on his notebook.

Maybe his knife was called Chaltier and talked to him... and he screamed "MAJINKEN" as he stabbed people. :P

...seriously now, after that the old "games make you violent" crap discussion is about to start all over again. Being a gamer is the most obvious reason why someone decides to go out killing people with a knife, after all. >_>

Don't worry, he'll be seen as higher than the people he killed in the eyes of the Japanese vocal moral minority because he showed incredible ambition by killing those who don't have the guts to do such a thing.

Its really quite depressing this. Any loss of life (not including virtual pixel related stuff which is not life at all) is just bad. I am traveling to Japan on Saturday with the intention of spending some serious time in Akihabara. I am likely to be there this time next week. I hope the feel of the place does not change while im out there.

The most messed up part is that much of this lashout at games is there to hide his troubles with his temp job (an industry that is tormenting a lot of young Japanese workers), as well as doing the damndest best to prevent the name of the company (toyota) from coming out. I'm sure they want to regulate the net; that way peoplell never know the truth, or at least the possibilities.

yeah it sucks that. It funny becuase there only shooting themselves in the foot. Computer games is a fucking huge business. Its nothing next to car manufacturing but its on the rise with little sign of stopping or even slowing down. Why would any government want to hinder such a nice tasty slice of economy.

I hope this massacre doesn't disturb the video game shopping atmosphere, too. That'd be a real tragedy.

Great. Japan's going for it too.

Eternal Fighter Zero is a fighting game made by Twilight Frontier (often shortened to Tasofro), who also made the two Touhou fighting games that everyone fanboys over. I'm guessing "cutesy bullet hell shooter" refers to Touhou.

As I've never resided in Japan for any amount of time and don't read news from Japan very often, perhaps an expert on the culture can answer this question for me. How sensationalist can the Japanese media be with regards to crimes that have at least a remote connection to a form of entertainment?
