STG covers album: Out Now! Direct download!

Post by MX7 »

EDIT

Album out now!

http://world-of-arcades.net/stgc09

I'd just like to say thank you to The Coop for his awesome cover, Worstplayer for stepping in to master the thing, Emphatic for doing the track listing, rtw for hosting it on World of Arcades, and of course everyone who contributed a track! Its an awesome album, and I think it achieves everything that I was hoping to see when I proposed the project. I think that we as a community have really made something interesting and invaluable to contribute to the STG scene :D

How about a sticky for a few weeks so everyone gets a chance to check it out?

*EDIT*

I think it's time to impose a deadline on this. As far as I know, it's just Herr Schatten and Nate who are wanting to submit something at the moment, apologies if I've forgotten anyone. In the interests of getting this wrapped up before xmas, I've decided to set a deadline for submitting material. This deadline will be Monday 27th October. If it's not possible to reach this deadline, just let me know and I'll work something out. Keep in mind we have someone who is willing to master the album (Eretsua), and someone who is very kindly willing to host the album, meaning we don't have to mess around with rapidshit (hats off to rtw!).

HYPER BONUS FUN ROUND INFERNO:

We still need a front cover for the album. While the album will be a digital download, I still feel it would be nice to have the potential to burn it onto CD, and shove a front cover into a jewel case for your viewing pleasure. Multiple submissions would not be a problem: you could simply choose the cover that suits your mood at that point. In order to inspire potential artists, I think at this point it is necessary to disclose some of the games that have covers featured on the album. Thus off the top of my head:

ACROBAT MISSION
BORDER DOWN
GEOMETRY WARS
JUDGEMENT SILVERSWORD
MARS MATRIX
MUCHI MUCHI PORK
MUSHA
MUSHIHIMESAMA 2
PHANTASMAGORIA OF FLOWER VIEW
PINK SWEETS
PULSTAR
RAIDEN

I've invariably forgot a few, I'm just trying to give budding artists a flavour of what potential themes to shove in.

Although I love the STG genre, I sometimes get annoyed at myself and perhaps others for not really contributing anything back into the mix. Usually I think 'fair enough, I don't have the skills to make a shooting game of my own', so I stick to playing them and posting a high score once in a blue moon. Still, this passivity frustrates me to some extent, so I've decided to suggest a way to contribute to the scene in a more active way: A Shmups Forum tribute/covers album. As you might guess, this would consist of an album of remixed and re-imagined tunes from our favourite shmups, in a variety of styles. I'm not sure how it would be distributed at the moment, and nor am I particularly worried. Instead, all I am seeking is potential support for the project. I know a number of Shmups members make music and play instruments, so this would be a perfect creative outlet. To get the ball rolling, I've done a couple of covers from a few recent Cave games on a gameboy using LSDJ. They can be found by clicking the myspazz link in my sig. Unfortunately, the tracks were recorded in awful quality (my new laptop can run pretty much anything, but does it have a good mic input? does it fuck). Think of them as a taster for the main event

So, everyone who can make music on the forum, I implore you to have a little bash around and see what you can come up with. Any style, any manner you wish to do so. Perhaps you might want to draw a front cover? Perhaps I'm getting ahead of myself here? At the moment, just an interest check. I think if done well, this could really be something that the Shmups forum could be proud of :D

if you can get hold of some sheet music, hit me up. not sure how i would go about recording it, but most of my friends are musicians in some shape or capacity, so i could prob get hold of someone else's equipment. would be able to provide mean skillz on guitar, bass, and trombone :!:

i like this idea. eretsua and i are finishing off a techno track, maybe once that's done i could persuade him to do a STG cover together. we did a metroid track once so who knows. ^__^

(i feel like doing Pink Sweets' stage 6 but it's too perfect to change anything...)

Nice idea. I nearly always play shmups with the mute on, but I still like the idea. Unfortunately I have no relevant skills to offer.

Good to see so much potential interest! Anyone else up for contributing something in some way shape or form? I'm really hoping to hear from Zebra Airforce, for example.

Heh :) I'm thinking about it. I've never done a cover and I'm not really highly educated when it comes to music, but I'll try.

I can try to make some remixes too, but my music isn't exactly best in the universe.

I would love to hear some remixes of "Stab And Stomp!" from Battle Garegga and that stage 7 tune. And "Burning Heat" from Gradius 2 ARC. 8)

Yep, Raiden Densetsu and Raiden II both have sheet music for one song included.

I do music with Renoise (a modern tracker program), but honestly I hate most shmup music. I use the man-focus-power of my brain to automagically tune it out while I'm playing :)

I do like some of the music in Galuda however.. I'd like to call dibs on that

When I do covers I like them to be drastically different from the original so if I did Galuda, instead of being all trancey, you might expect to find harpsichords or something :D (Just a concept at the moment)

Edit: If there is anyone else interested in doing music from Galuda, let's coordinate so we can do different tracks.

Any kind of deadline on this? I figure a couple of months at least?

I figure with a name like Dj, you would do something musical as well. You don't have anything to contribute? Maybe you could beatmatch several songs or do some scratching, or even MC over the twinbee music? That'd be pretty hot

Got rid of my sorry excuse for a set long ago.

Just moved in with my girlfriend and got a new job. Times have changed. I'll be lucky to even record a replay or participate/co-run a STGT at the rate of implied castration I'm up against. 'Haven't even hung out with the Michigan shmups crew in ages

If things lighten up, I may steal Reason and take a shot at it... but that won't be anytime soon.

Tell you what.

a year ago, I gave namakoteam a chance to set the tracklist to a superplay mix I was working on. They lost interest and failed to finish telling me what tracks to use, so I never released the replay. It was a no miss no bomb Gekirindan 2P run.

Since your thread is about remixing a full album of game music. If there is enough participation, we could say, if you guys run covers of the Gekirindan soundtrack, I would dub the tracks into my replay and put it out there so you may hear your work as if it would have been in the video game.

The thing about the Gekirindan soundtrack is that Zuntata basically just recorded the same song 5 times, meaning covering 5+ interpretations of that 1 theme from users would add up into something usable without coordination issues, "who is doing what," etc. That and the soundtrack is short, so...yeah.... small training-wheels project to see who is really going to make the music.

If all this interests you, tell me so and I can go see if I still have my recording.

I don't even really like Gekirindan, I was working on a Twin Hawk remix actually...

How come you only remix games that already have great music? You should make some superplays of games in that "worst music" thread or something.

A doom/sludge version of the boss music from DoDonpachi would work really well I think.

I was thinking of maybe doing a trance mix of the level one track from Garagga. Maybe we should all decide on what we're doing before we actually go about writing them, so we don't make duplicates.

Duplicates in my eyes would be fine, as long as they were different enough from each other :)

Well, I have a feeling that the vast majority of these songs are going to be electronic, so I'm not sure how different they're going to be. I guess it really doesn't matter that much anyway though...

I'm deciding between Raiden 2 stage 1 theme and Geometry Wars in-game music. Probably Raiden, it's already a bit trance-y so it should be easy.
