I'm pretty sure you can get better results by carefully reading books written in good English.

Agreed. I bought one of the kanji test softs. No too impressed with it. It's like digital flash cards rather than learning software. Doesn't have stroke order from what I can tell.

I think that using the almight internet helps learning English a lot - by reading, writing, watching movies in English etc my English improved a lot, since I use it almost daily (and on certain days even read more in English than in German, and sometimes don´t even realize it). There is no better way to learn a language than actively using it. I have a German-English translation site linked in the top bar of my browser, I use it maybe three times a day, it helped me a lot.

I think that all this DS learning software is just a pointless lifestyle fad. Just by posting here you´ll learn a lot more English than a handheld program can ever teach you, given that you don´t use AOL-speak all the time.

iIn school i didnt learn any english at all.
So i ended up learning it myself on just that way.
It's not perfect but it improved so much within that time.
These games are jokes, only, thought for marketing.

yep, I also didn't learn much from classes at all, games, movies, internet and meeting english speaking people did everything for me.

I saw an ad for this stuff on the damn train, for English vocabulary, French language, and Spanish language. What happened to playing games for fun? I refuse to learn anything useful while playing games!

I learned my english mostly on my own, by reading game and appliance manuals, magazines, comics, and watching movies. Just as said above, you learn better by actively using it.

Kanji Sonomama Rakubiki Jiten for the DS helped me learn Katakana.. it has the pronunciation of each kana as soon as you touch one, keyboard style.

I have no interest in learning Japanese though. The Kanji side didn't seem very constructive at all, since I didn't know the stroke order even if I was aware of what the kanji looked like, or what the romaji was. For example, I recognize 地, I know it's "chi", but I couldn't write it in the DS program. Japanese IME helps a lot in this case.

These things are a gimmick, much like the Brain Training games. More "brain training" games need to be like Professor Layton, where they're simultaneously enjoyable, and educational.

If you want to learn japanese, grab some good books and practice everyday. Those edutainment software are grossly innefficient imo. Practicing kanji, for example, can be done faster and better on a piece of paper.

If you have a passing interest, don't bother.

I'd suggest that the internet is a really bad idea if you're wanting to learn written English. You'll get some basics down, but you'll learn a bundle of bad habits in the process.

Personally, I think any form of language software is better than nothing, as long as it is not that "learn a language in 10 minutes" crap. Like other people on here, I found Kanji Sonomama Rakubiki Jiten to be quite useful. Actually, its the most used game on my DS. Without it, I would never be able to learn Japanese. Another useful game I found was Tadashii Kanji Kakitori Kun, which was given to me by a friend in Japanese class. Its pretty useless for learning the language unless you speak Japanese already. However, it does a great job of teaching stroke order, which is necessary in the Kanji dictionary for DS.

As far as grammar goes, I just go to this site:

Neat! but I don't buy new mobilephones (I inherit relatives ones when they get new ones) and even though I did the hell anything like this would appear in Norwegian stores (cannot remember seing any sharp phone in flesh) an even less probable one with jap dic.

I think the jithen is the most used soft in my DS as it's my ultimate japanese tool, and It's useful and not at all that piky when it comes to stroke order, even I can look up kanji on this one.Oh and I love that piss long enty on fuck
