Would the modern "gamer" take to a re-release NES?
I'm just wondering what it would take to get Nintendo to actually re-release the NES. I know it's not going to happen but it would be extremely funny to see game players demand an outdated console and Nintendo having to really consider re-releasing. Everyone seems to hold the NES on a pedestal.
So answer this:
"What if game players forced a major company to consider re-releasing a dead console? and find old/new developers?"
Just a fun "What if" discussion.

Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

enough clones around, but IF big N would rerelease the original concept as a genuine article, I'd buy it in an instant.
It should be extremely cheap to make these days so it would have the potential to penetrate about every home in the world.
With it's extensive library of games there should be something for everyone too. If people are prepared to look beyond the now very dated gfx that is.
I'd prefer to leave things as they were though, unless a new Nintendo thing compatible with the Famicom/Nes is on the table.

I doubt that any still-existing foundry can make the original NES chips. If they have to do a ground-up redesign of the chips anyway, I don't see how it would really be different from any other clone, except that the sound would probably be accurate. Nintendo no doubt prefers the Virtual Console business model anyway, since it does away with such annoyances as used game sales and unlicensed publishing (Homebrew Channel notwithstanding).
This. Add in true region intercompatibility (lol impossible) and I'd faint.iatneH wrote:What I would buy is a SNES with RGB and S-video and perfect sound, if it's the size of a Genesis 3. A smaller power adaptor would be nice too.
Thinking more realistically, it doesn't even need all the extra stuff—I just want a brand new system rather than having to buy second-hand goods whose history I can't be assured of.
As for the "What if?" part, I really can't even imagine it happening. So it's hard for me to imagine the consequences.
I think that a small group would be overjoyed, and the vast majority would not even notice...or bitch endlessly about the decision across the internet.
video games suck
I doubt I would buy one. Theres no need for it when you could just make a really good NES pad for the wii or something (which they did right)

Why would Nintendo EVER consider such a thing? They are selling their NES games on the VR to pretty steep prices for games that you can get a lot cheaper in physical form in most cases, and Nintendo doesn´t make any money from games you buy second hand. So they would only release a new NES (SNES, whatever) if they could sell some new games. They just took the step to offer their games virtually, I don´t think they´ll EVER re-release old hardware from now on.
Besides, I love the backwards-compability on the Gameboy line. It´s a bit of a shame that the DS "only" plays GBA games, but being able to play Super Mario Land on the same device as Aria Of Sorrow is a pretty awesome thing.

Correct, it's not going to happen because of Virtual Console. But the topic was only hypothetical, wasn't it? Besides, Nintendo has already re-released the Famicom (->AV Famicom). And like I wrote above, the few people who are crazy enough to spend a lot of money on such an old system can get an RGB moded AV Famicom.
If Nintendo re-made the NES, they could make the circuitry incredibly small. The cartridge slot and I/O ports would be 90% of the machine.
I'd buy one to keep playing my old games without the hassle of the original cartridge loader. Likewise for the SNES. I'd also expect compatibility to be better than the FC Twin.
However, people who didn't already have collections of NES games would not likely be interested.

The SNES 2 is already pretty damn small, and the RGB mod takes all of about ten minutes. The S-Video mod, I take it, is a bit more involved. What I would buy is a SNES with RGB and S-video and perfect sound, if it's the size of a Genesis 3

We here shall not rest until we have made a drawing-room of your shaft, and if you do not all finally go down to your doom in patent-leather shoes, then you shall not go at all.
As a person who owns more than 150 NES games, let me be the first to say that 90% of them are an absolute chore to play. That's what makes them enjoyable for me - playing something and saying, "God damn, this game was never meant to be beaten but I mother-fucking did it." But, frankly, most people probably wouldn't like that.
The SNES 2 is about the size of a Genesis 2. The Genesis 3 is smaller but oh the humanity, look what they did to get it there.it290 wrote:The SNES 2 is already pretty damn small, and the RGB mod takes all of about ten minutes. Anyway: Famiclones suck; I hate having Twin Famicom now lead to information about a shit clone instead of the Sharp unit; I hate that we're going to be expected FOR THE REST OF OUR LIVES to plunk down for games we already have, but that's how the cookie crumbles.
The NES games available on the Virtual Console are too accessible for modern gamers to bother with anything else, mostly because it's convenient to pay and own a virtually downloaded item. As much as people hate to admit it, this has become a reality in gaming. It's entirely centred around continence.
At very best, you might see them release a "xx-in-1" plug-n-play NES package, the kind of thing you'd see in a blister pack at K-Mart. I know I've seen something similar, but for Megadrive.
If they released a standalone NES console, I probably wouldn't buy it. I already own a Wii and a PC, so everything is already covered. Plus there's this small issue wherein I didn't actually grow up with Nintendo, and I don't find the majority of NES games enjoyable.

ROMS are too freely prevalent and there are too many $50 NES knockoffs for Nintendo to make any real money on new NES hardware.
Like Elixir said, Nintendo already pimps their NES titles on the Virtual Console. What else do they need?
But, it would be entertaining to see cartridges in box stores again.

What's this talk about EDTV? I thought scan-doubling was the devil and true low res was god here? Anyway, I still have two working NES systems, so I have no interest in buying more such hardware.
is sort-of possible, at least you can separate the square waves on one side and the triangle/noise/PCM on the other, since they are output on different pins on the CPU.stereo sound
Ignoring conversion lag, which is one reason to want native support of a given resolution . . .ED-057 wrote:What's this talk about EDTV? I thought scan-doubling was the devil and true low res was god here?
progressive lo-res > progressive hi-res > interlaced hi-res
the last, worst choice is all you get with a stock NES, correct?
