Is sealed games collecting retarded?
collecting of *anything* isn't what you would call clever. but i don't think it's right to pick on people for their hobby. the whole "complete kit" thing is definitely not my bag, but i've learnt to shut up about it

to me money has always been for enjoyment though, so whatever makes you happy basically.

Well, I can somewhat understand that but personally I open mine and display them like I would a sculpture instead of limiting them to the forced 2d-esque perspective. Yeah what about sealed comic books that are never read, or sealed action figures that are never played with? Exactly the same. Also the whole, they are buying games they will never play, assumes that they have the consoles to play them on in the first place. Maybe they don't own any consoles at all? Either way it is as good/bad as any form of sealed collections.

Collecting is always impractical. This is especially true of things that are collected in a state (Sealed) that prevents their intended use. Collecting is also ridiculously expensive if you're late to the party.
I did vote YES on this survey, and I do think Sealed Game collecting is kinda dumb. However, I do understand the impulse to collect things and I've overpaid to get sealed items in the past.
I think eBay is a big catalyst. It gave many people access to things they would have never previously thought to try collecting. Sealed LEGO sets from the 1980s, for example. In the 1980s, these were ripped open by kids and played with. Now, a bunch of people trying to relive their youth stumble across their favorite kit on eBay, bid like mad, and suddenly they become collectors who want to buy them all. They get a few that are worn out, so they start seeking out the incredibly rare sealed copies and bid even higher. They realize they paid a ton of money because it's sealed, so they leave it sealed and try to complete a sealed collection.
This then spills over into the community as people seeking profit scour the countryside searching for any sealed product, and search garage sales for stuff that can be resold on eBay.
I'll never spend $5 on a penny just because it's old, but I have spent double on sealed items that were a few years out of production. However, I open the sealed stuff I buy, so collectors think I'm crazy.
Fortunately, I've broken myself of this habit and usually look for used items in good condition these days.

At a recent con I just blasted away $150 for a copy of DoDonPachi on the PS1. I knew it was rare, I knew I had to have it..... with the intent of USING it.

When I was a kid and the RPG Earthbound came out I was all over it along with my cousin (he was the one with the SNES, I had the Genesis). He bought a copy and I didn't bother because we just took turns with his. Less than a year after its release I saw it was on sale for $15 at Wal-Mart! I still didn't buy it just because I didn't have a SNES at the time. Looking back, I wished I would have picked up a copy. Not because they go for around $200 for complete mint sets now but because I want the guidebook that came with the game and I don't want to pay $200 for one! And if I miraculously found an unopened copy selling for $15 NOW you know I would buy it and tear that sucker open! I don't care about no $185 profit, I want my guidebook.
I'm the kind of person who rips everything out of packets, be they games, comics, records or action figures.

That attitude does work for some specific unusable items, like old coins or post stamps, and all similar shit that's not really interesting to anyone in particular except the collectors. All collecting seems like a waste of time and money to me unless you're specifically trying to hoard something which will increase in value with the intention of later selling it at a profit. Still though, I guess if you get more enjoyment out of owning a sealed copy of a game than the enjoyment of actually playing the game, it's hard to criticize. I'm just puzzled.

I wont say I dont like N-G.com but I do like this place more and killercabs more. People tend to keep there posts shorter and rants will often end after about eight lines (which is right about the time i usually get sick of reading)

the collectors market has moved over to games, it's been here for years.
- collectors and limited edition boxes for releases
- collectors and limited edition guides (i didn't know about this till recently)
- collectors/rare versions of games (omg campaign ddp!) - pokemon games are major offenders, even megaman power battle or whatever..
heck, there are even collectable card games now making it into video games like eye of judgement.
when i do buy a game, i usually want it to contain at least the box, the insert, the manual, and the game medium (of course.) it doesn't have to be new, mint, etc however reassurance (especially in the age of optical discs) that the game is going to play and not skip and crash is worth caring about.
i used to make copies of my audio cds for the car since they always seem to get scratched up and destroyed in there. preserving the disc so that it isn't ruined, perhaps thats somewhat the mentality of those that buy 2 games and only open one. i dunno.
at the end people choose to collect things, we're strange packrat like creatures. theres a part of me that doesn't want to own anything at all, but that's not really feasible either.
if only everything i wanted to use or do could be some service i pay nominally for a subscription, that would be interesting.
