Concerning those two big orbs with green rings around 'em; your force pod things know which one is the correct one to shoot so fire em off and get that 10,000 bonus asap.

Also, on 5-minute mode I've seen this large rainbow orb appear that floats down the center of the screen. It's worth 100,000 points! I think in order to make it appear one must destroy all the enemy waves. I base this on the fact it only appears very near the end of the level and no enemies appear afterword.
Is that level 1 or 2?

How would you manage to do that one? I always miss some when the circle comes out.

Oh I don't mean actually shooting every single enemy; I just mean being fast enough to clear all the enemy waves (if there even is a limit). That's just my theory.

I can only make the 100,000 point white/rainbow orb appear on the second level. Maybe it appears in the first level if you're insanely good. For the record I've tried another 5 or 6 times and I can't make it appear again. Dunno what my problem is :?

Anyone know how to make it appear consistently?

Yay!
Bought this game 3 days ago; now I'm #1 in finland both in 2min and 5min games, ha ha. World ranks are #1022 for 2min and #477 for 5min
..and I havent even tried the Lazarus bonus!

Yes I've seen that rainbow orb also once in the 2nd level. I think you just have to clear enough enemy waves to get it.

This game feels very much like star force (my favourite coin op of all time); and is INSANELY addictive.. best purchase ever

Thanks brother, lol - still wish I could be on it though dammit. In fact, I haven't even picked it up since my last post - but after reading about this "rainbow orb", I've definitely got to get back on it -

Btw, were you the same "postman" I was going back & forth with on the Soldner-X rankings, the end of last year?

By the way folks, no need to kill your arm/wrist/fingers trying to shoot down everything in the credits. All you get is "Congratulations! 1341/1341" I guess I shouldn't have expected anything more (no secret message from Takahashi Meijin :().

And just as I and MJR suspected-- gotta clear enough enemy waves to make that 100,000 point orb appear. I hit it so early that one time enemies kept appearing after it! In fact, it was a good enough run to vault me into second place as the stupidly named as5Jv9 :D (for the tourney).

Maybe it was earlier then, when the game came out - so not you on the ranking boards then?

Just press the fire button at the beginning of the credits and the NES Star Soldier ship will be yours to pilot.

Been a casual shmup fan for a while, and since I rather liked Soldier Blade on the VC I decided to try out Star Soldier R. I absolutely love it, and have become rather addicted to it. Current high score is 2,381,300, and I'm as of right now ranked #2 in the Northwest US. No idea how those Japanese folks are getting upwards of 2,700,000. I've gotten pretty good at getting the rainbow orb - the trick is definitely careful Force management.
(Whoa - just checked the leaderboard on the website, and I'm ranked 13th in the US. I guess I should enter the tournament. And here I thought I was a casual player...)
Tips:
Use the Forces to take out tricky air targets while clearing out ground targets and collecting yellow orbs. When there's a group of D-Styles and Scapes, it's much easier to take the Scapes out with the Forces than shots, because they tend to dodge. Similarly, Forces can help you take out air targets while avoiding breaking pipes accidentally.
Hitting the Lazarus with the engine blast from changing speed helps a great deal - position yourself in the lower right as it closes on you, then change speeds repeatedly.
When the Carons show up in stage 2, point-blank one of them to avoid breaking your combo.
Getting hit will cost you around 30,000 points from lost powerup bonuses.
if you miss a Zeg or botch a Lazarus/Delilah bonus, it's probably best to reset. Same with getting hit more than a couple times.
Enemy waves carry over between stages; it's vital to clear waves quickly in the first stage as well as the second if you want the rainbow orb.
After IDing the correct Psy, switch back to defense formation to recharge and just blast it with all four forward shots.
It may be possible to defeat the first phase of the boss in one cycle - I can get him in two easily, and I've noticed that if you position yourself carefully you can hit him with one of the two forward shots without getting hit by his shots. If you point-blank him with your forward diagonal shot as well... has anyone pulled this off yet?

Awesome tips NMcCoy. I'm currently 4th in the US. I'd been getting rather discouraged lately, as I haven't been able to come close to my 2,555,100 score since (usually just barely breaking 2 million). The tips you brought up bring some clarity to a few questions I had, so thanks!

I still have some trouble with force management, though. I'll fire em off and forget to bring em back in to charge 'em! :x

Also, I've been trying to destroy both arms of the level 2 boss in one go. Not able to yet, but I know it's possible. Right now I usually finish 5-minute mode with about 38 seconds left. I think it's possible to finish with at least 45 (well, maybe).

Anyway, good luck and if you haven't entered the competition yet, certainly do so!

Go to credits. Notice it's playing the 8-bit intro to the Star Soldier theme. When that ends and the first credit-intro text disappears (when the 2nd credit text appears), hit buttons and you'll get your NES version ship with the fun powerup music. If you hit buttons too early, you exit out of the credits.

Destroy the credits.

More tips:
* After the initial group of land targets, just move back and forth along the bottom of the screen, sweeping the full width of the top of the screen with your shots. If you kill the enemies efficiently the Lazarus should appear before you collect your first blue powerup. Deploy your Forces as soon as the Lazarus is destroyed to kill the things that come in from the bottom corners.

* If you don't have 700,000 points before the first boss you probably haven't done well enough.

* Once you have 5 Forces, additional blue powerups not only give you a score bonus, they recharge you. Manage your Forces accordingly; it's sensible to use them liberally at the start of level 2 as you should be getting some tricky air patterns if you've been efficient in level 1; a blue powerup will be along shortly to recharge you.

* Think of Forces something like bombs; when there's enemies at a tricky angle to get with your normal guns, deploy the Forces briefly to zap them and then bring them back right away. Similarly, if they're charged, deploy them to handle air targets while you deal with collecting yellow orbs or dealing with tricky ground situations.

* Use your Forces sparingly against the Carons in level 2; you'll want to have them charged to deal with the D-Style/Scape group and the Psys that follow.

* Deploy your Forces when you're in danger of breaking combo; they might see something before you do. Remember that you get bonuses not just for max combo at completion, but combo*10 points every 100. Breaking combo will probably cost you your shot at the high score.

I'm pKciLd in the contest rankings, by the way.

Awesome dude, this has helped me quite a bit. Current Score:

7th
z5PApM
2,475,900 Southeastern

You know something... when I first heard the game was going to be Caravan only I was extremely disappointed... but I have put more time into this game than any other entry in the series. This game rocks.
What more can I say I wouldn't be here today if the old school didn't pave the way.

I'm amused that all the people thanking me for tips have higher scores than I do. :D

Here's a challenge for everyone: What's the highest score you can get on 5-minute mode without firing any shots? I got 164,700 on my first attempt.

w00t! I'm now officially #1 in the Northwest US. I know I can do better, too, as I took a couple hits that game, but I think I'll wait for my title to be taken first so I can take it back. More fun that way.

its too bad my wii's wireless is so bad that i can't even connect to the internet anymore. otherwise, i'd shell out $8 (actually 10 cause thats the smallest increment nintendo sells points in). bummer. ps3 connects way better.

Blarg, I had an excellent run that would've put me back in first for the northwest, and I botched the Delilahs at the end.

245,900 on five-minute no-shots mode. Still haven't beaten the second boss yet.

Edit: W00T!! 2,567,300! World rank 90, Northwest rank 1! Heck yeah! Whoo, adrenaline rush. The tenseness of getting a fantastic score on stage 1 and then needing to not screw up stage 2 was totally nerve-wracking.

I got this tonight and bloody love it. Early days though, and until now my Wavebird's stopped me getting a Classic Controller.

Or has anybody used a Wii Hori Stick with this yet?

I'm still scoring only 767,800 for now, but it's early days.

By the way, some of you still need to get over to the Shmups.com hi-score table for this game, tucked away in The Caravan Games thread!

EDIT: Spelling

EDIT: 841,700 on the two minute run, but it's time for bed!
