feeling everyone's age a little

Liz, Harriet Wheeler, Bilinda Butcher sometimes. Skipping vibrato was more interesting before pitch autocorrection.

I think I'll end up owning 78's of the last castrato. It's so pure it hurts, be it ever so counterfeit. Ghosty, if you will

I only know her from Sirius, but I don't remember any Melodyne artifacting. I'll get Citrus sometime before starting my 78 collection, that's a promise.

Melodyne is so good, that when in the proper hands, you can't tell it's done. There's some pretty hard science behind it to make it sound as natural as possible.

Obviously there are a lot of crap singers and crap producers out there that make it not so transparent.

Of course it's good. I ran a 133% timestretch on Loveless back in '99 and actually found it listenable after all those intensive hours of Celeron computation.

But the temperament of the scale Melodyne corrects to is extremely audible to me. A good singer finds a just pitch in the chord morass.

Since Melodyne didn't even become public until 2001, you either beta tested it, or you're BS'ing (I vote BS)

If I get you properly, you basically just said that Melodyne sounds too perfect and most singers have imperfections, except you said it in a snobbish, deliberately obfuscated way to make yourself sound like some kind of elite audiophile master of the universe.

Fuck you dude

Don't you call me the A-word. I listen so loud that tonal beat feels like misplaced, bone-conducted rhythm. I don't sit in front of speakers either.

In other words, "audiophile" is a fucked-up thing to call me, considering I'm giving myself tinnitus. I concede a preference that the tones in the tinnitus be justly intoned. :D

Google EZTimeStretch, that's what I used in 1999. But no, I wasn't saying Melodyne was too perfect.

Forgot Jimmy Somerville. There's an AIDS joke in here somewhere; happy?

Female: Kristin Hersh. Her voice is teh sex.

I don't usually regard male voices as "beautiful".

EZTimeStretch works in completely different way. It stretches/pitchshifts everything. Melodyne can analyze individual notes and you can correct only ones that need correction.

Oh, and you're not supposed to use it on entire song, but on individual tracks. If you use it on whole mix, of course there will be "ringing" and other artifacts.

We're getting a bit off-topic. Someone start VST thread and we'll continue there. Now back to singers.

She's got her own band now, Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions, but they're not nearly as good as Mazzy Star, imo. A little bit to polished and sober sounding.

Male: Morrissey, of course!

Gay voices are always the best. Need another example: Freddy Mercury!

Off the top of my head, unless I can think of some better examples,

Male:
Richard Butler from The Psychedelic Furs

Female:
Harriet Wheeler from The Sundays

EDIT: Yes, Bilinda Butcher FTW! I overlooked that one. Thumbs up for Morrissey, too.

Kristen Hersh is good. I think I like Throwing Muses better than her solo stuff.

Has anybody mentioned Sigur Rós? I'm not going to look up the diacritical marks.

My point in even mentioning it was that computers are a lot faster now than in 1999. If you think EZTS / Time Factory make horrible artifacts at 125% or 75%, you should try it. It isn't a stomp box.

My point about pitch correction, which I fully realize can now have great timbral granularity for edits, is usually not stochastically applied, or entirely comparable, to the period of pitch-finding (and the final pitch value) in a singer's voice. It would be more time consuming than editing a sequencer track, unless the neural net were turned loose on the glissando / portamento mix and the pitch value. I'm sure that's possible. It shouldn't BE a matter of a recording engineer's skillset, is what I'm getting at.

No one will read a VST thread. There is no happy middle ground between people who record music and people who like it. Like how you can expand your musical vocabulary with torrents and rapidshare. It's educational. Imagine a computer listening to all of it; what could it do? More importantly, how would its knowledge be licensed for resale?

I wonder if I'll get a better voice if I become gay.

More on-topic, though, I'd also mention Klaus Meine. His voice was very beautiful (and still is, but it's obviously much harsher now after 40+ years of singing for Scorpions).
