Ok, here are my last scores of these games; so I can get on to playing things I'm not terrible at :P

1942 - 206 490 at stage 6
1943 - 1 056 110
Kai - 1 462 590 at round 7 (Yamashiro)

My paltry run in 1942 came to an end in a stage that the planes don't even shoot at you, I crashed my last life into another plane.

1942 (MAME)- 133,650 (I believe the stage 4, the stage where absolutely nothing shoots at you)- Bloodreign

Now my fingers feel really tired.

1943 1876810 Std Jamma machine PCB UK, Level 13
No Cheats used either, or rather, the one cheat I know about not used.

My first post! I thought I was the only nutter who lived for shmups

Oh and in the 80's I finished 1942 once, don't remember the score though :D

1942

RFP - 212 960 - 6 - MAME (Auto-fire used)

1943

RFP - 1 103 660 - 8 - MAME (Auto-fire used)
(Not sure about the stage, might have been 6 or 7, maybe the level indicating いせ, or ISE as the boss... for sure it was an aircraft carrier at the end, shame I died right there too)
EDIT, thanks to the ST I realized it was Hiryu!

1942

RFP - 295 630 - 7 - MAME (Auto-fire)

1943 Kai

RFP - 857 450 - 5 - MAME (Auto-fire)

I wish there was an ST for Kai like there is for normal 1943, at least it would help in remembering the stages...
That, and I'd also like to know how to get 100% destruction on St2.

stuminator - 2,445,960 - 16 - PS2

The last stage is just plain brutal. Enemy bullets are much faster and there's way too many enemies to handle.

To hell with you, Stage 6.

1942 (No Auto-fire)

Javel - 769,530 - 18 - MAME

I've just recently begun playing this and I think it's amazing. It's actually the first "classic" shooter I've gotten any enjoyment out of.

I will definately try to clear this one.

Eh, what's up w the extends in this game? I've had several games now when the game just stops giving them out. Kind of annoying when you're on your last life and the game robs you of the 720k-extend.

2 lives
20k, 80k, then every 80k

That's the default settings, right?

Javel - 1,336,800 - 30 - MAME

So close, and I just had to go ahead and fuck it up

Also, I got my last extend at 720k. I'm beginning to think it's tied to the shot rate; get a low % and the game wont give you any more lives. Someone must know something about this? gameoverdude?

RFP - 311,210 - 7 - MAME (Auto-fire) [Note: In the case of 1942 I'd like to say it's actually auto-fire used, since I don't use it the entire time, unlike 1943 and Kai.]

Yeah, it's a mediocre improvement, but I had to do it. I find the more I play this game, the more I struggle, why?!

Not that anyone cares much about this game but this is what I just found out.
arcade-history.com wrote: * An interesting bug (1942): If you win an extra plane from points when killing a boss plane, no extra planes will be awarded on the basis of points. Extra planes can still be obtained by getting the Black/Red POW, but no point-based bonuses will be awarded for the rest of the game.
Maybe they fixed this in Capcom Generations, vol1?

Heavens to Murgatroyd! This game is great! Fun even!

I finally pulled a 1,000,000+ score after playing for about 3 or 4 days.

Still a wuss, using auto-fire.

1943 Kai
RFP - 1,612,930 - 8 - MAME (Auto-fire)

Stage 8 really gets cheap.

1943
RFP - 2,035,980 - 12 - MAME (Auto-fire)

I think it was Yamashiro but I can't be 100%. It's either that or Daihiryu. And geez: 2 035 980, 630 points behind SAM.

May I ask how you got THAT high a score? I'm bad at scoring this game.

RFP - 2,642,240 - 16 - MAME (Auto-fire)

Died just before the Yamato, god damn do things get messy around there. Missed 100% on Soryu, Ayako II and III.

I am so used to playing shmups on MAME, it was pretty interesting to play this on a real cab. Now I know how bad it is to play without autofire, lol.

Saw this thread and threw my 1943 PCB in for the heck of it. Owned by the stage 16 boss as usual.

For the life of me I'm not too good at these 194X shooters, but I like them quite a bit.

Bloodreign- 1943 453,530 stage 4 MAME

Yes using rapid fire as my fingers hurt quite a bit from all the tapping that is required if rapid fire isn't enabled. Was doing just fine with the spread fire, but along came some red planes and I needed health, what I got was the damned shotgun, which doesn't fire fast, overcome by bullets finishing me for good.

Edit: Higher score achieved, still dying at stage 4's boss carrier.

I found 1943 at a local arcade and love it to pieces. I'm not great at the game but I thoroughly enjoy playing it. Have not cleared it.

Arcade 1942, via Mame:

lgb - 224.590 - Stage 6 - 88% Destroy Rate

You can collect things while dying, if the exact location where your plane was happens to pass over an item before the screen resets to respawn.
--------
edit: lgb - 230.500 - Stage 6 - 87% Destroy Rate
