btw this topic is now about castlevania
Castlevania is an awesome game.
It's a platformer.
You can attack things with whips and subweapons.
And it's by Konami so it's definitely good.
The old school "retrovanias" require things like... STRATEGY
because you can't just run in and dodge an axe armor's boomerang axes or something...
no...
you have to like, whip those axe armors' axes when they throw them
otherwise u dead
That's what I like about retrovanias.
You can't just go in and mindlessly slaughter everything. No, you have to learn everything otherwise you get clobbered by something stupid.
Retrovanias also feature hidden health pickups all over the stage, but if you learn the stages well enough, you don't need them at all. But I guess they help lol.
ONOZ THIS TOPIC NOW HAS REAL DISCUSSION NOW YOU CANT CLOSE IT LOL

Retrovania bosses also have added layers of difficulty to them due to restrictions on character movement and weapon range.
While you can do a whip spin to trivialize Death's scythe's in later games, the crappy range of the whip in earlier CV's forces you to pay more attention to the scythe trajectories and be more strategic about hitting the boss or destroying scythes.
The lack of features such as double jump, midair direction change, and low character speed also make boss patterns much more strategic. Something pathetic like Dracula's hellfire attack suddenly turns lethal. You can't just slash it away with a swinging sword or double jump over it, you need develop some other method of dealing with it. An extremely simple attack or enemy group can create lots of depth due to the restrictions imposed on your character.
So while attack anticipation is important in any Castlevania, in Retrovanias one must also time and aim everything properly. In later Castlevanias a double jump, super jump, backdash, slide kick etc. can help the player react quicker, which makes these things less important.
