Skydiving... I regret my promise already.

Post by Super Laydock »

I just feel so stupid with my big mouth...

My best (girl) friend did some bungee jumping AND a sky dive while on holiday in New Zealand. My sister did some abseiling from over 50 meters at our local church last week.

Me, having had a few drinks, said to go skydiving this week.
And now I have reserved a tandemjump for next weekend.

to be honest though, I am "shitting my pants" by the very though of it.
I am more scared of heights than of about anything else in this world.

But: a Man a Man, a Word a Word. So I'll have to go if I do not want to make me more of a pussy than I am already seen as... ;)

Anyone experienced with this? :?

Oh come on those things are incredibly safe, there's no reason at all to be scared. You'll build up so much adrenaline that you'll want to do it again once you touch the ground.

I did bungee jumping from a bridge in Switzerland and it was GREAT.

When you fly, just flap your hands and try to avoid the mines :D
Alas, Ikaruga is going...

Undesired, unwanted them...
What makes them go?

These things fucking scare the shit out of me. I don't know how people are meant to enjoy this, or why. AJ Hackett (famous kiwi bungee jumper) seems to be perfectly fine with it though..

I would never do it. If you don't want to, just say no. It's your choice.

People die doing this shit all the time, man! Even really experienced people! I guess you're just braver than I am. When they're scraping you off the pavement, I'm sure one of the workers will say "damn, that was one brave mother fucker. Totally not a pussy". Only a pussy would stand up for himself and tell a girl "you know, I think I've changed my mind. Falling through the air really doesn't sound as much fun now that I'm sober".

Honestly though, while accidents do happen, it's still relatively safe. If it was me I'd probably just say 'bitch, I was drunk, I don't even remember that shit' if it was something that I didn't want to do, but I'd actually really like to go skydiving.

I wasn't drunk when saying this, It's one of the things I REALLY wanted to do for a long time already.

Doesn't make less scared about it though...........

Oh, well your original post kind of made it sound like you were trying to be a bad-ass in front of a girl and that you had absolutely no desire to actually do it. If it's something that you've been thinking about for awhile then yeah, go for it. I don't think that anyone can say anything over the internet that's going to make you feel any better about it, especially when it comes to the moment of truth when you're looking down and the instructor says 'jump'. But when you get down safely to the ground you're going to feel great, and really proud of yourself. Or you might just throw up, call yourself an idiot, and swear to never do anything like it again. I mean you never know. I'm pretty sure that the pants-shitting feeling that you have is half of the fun. When you're up there and you say 'fuck it' and just completely let go, you know? I'm sure you'll like it, and even if you don't, at least it's a new experience :D

The swearing part probably will be there...;)

I value my body a little too much to go tossing it out of planes, parachute or not. Good luck, though ..

Stop thinking it's going to be scary. I'm sure it's actually going to be a great and unique experience.

I have a friend who do scuba-diving, and he invited me one day to go with him, and I promptly accepted. My whole family went insane when they heard about it, and they told me countless horror stories from the sea and stuff. They actually weren't expecting me to come back alive.

Guess what, I did it, and it was incredible. It was so good I did it again later. And those are memories I'll never forget.

I envy you and I wish I was in your place.

I've done both, bungee jump and tandum skydive, and had them both video taped. This way I don't have to ever do them again. Both were extremely fun.

Haha. In fact I don't even have a VCR to play the tape anymore, so I should probably look into digitizing it at somepoint, and then I might think about uploading it. The skydive had an awsome Van Halen "Jump" soundtrack to it.

I did a few dives through a university club, Its definetly something everyone should experience firsthand. You really feel like you have scored a victory against death when your chute opens. The fall isn't that bad but the landing is probably the worst part, its over pretty quickly aswell. At least with the tandem jump you don't control the parachute, keep your eyes closed and the instructor will do the rest. However landing is serious you could break a leg easily if you hit the ground at the wrong angle, you might want to open them at 500 feet

Well now that you've revealed that you've really wanted to do this for a long time, then its ok Mister Laydock.
I'm sure you'll love it, but I would PAY LARGE DOLLARS for a vid of your face in the plane prior to the jump, the vid of the descent wouldn't matter to me but the 5 minutes leading up to it would be priceless viewing for me  .

What initials do you use when you enter a hi-score in a game? Just so we know what to put on your tombstone. :P

If taped, I'll be sure to edit out that part (it should be humiliating enough). ;)

I'd like to be shot into space when dead..., but since my insurance probably won't cover that... MAJ and SLD are the initials I use for signing my HS threads. Pick the one you like the most. :P

About how much does skydiving cost in your area of the planet, if you don't mind me asking? One of the reasons that I haven't done it yet is because it's pretty expensive here in the United States, and definitely not the sort of thing that you impulsively go for, just out of the blue, without factoring the price.

I am paying 199 Euro for the jump itself.
A video reportage (which I booked) costs an 80 Euro extra.

You also might want to try indoor skydiving first, if there's any place near where you live where you can do it. There's a huge indoor skydiving place a few miles from my house, and it might be a good way to introduce yourself to it and work off some of the stress.

As far as people dying from this sort of thing, people die all the time in car accidents, (far more, actually) and yet none of us probably gives a second thought to getting in a car.

But, if you decide you don't want to do it, then don't go condemning yourself for being a "pussy"-you aren't.

Ive sky dived & it was a terrific thrill!

After I stopped screaming ( just kidding  ) I was hit by the absolute quiet. I was floating with the wind & it was as if I was just hanging there, well I was actually, but it didnt seem as if I was falling at all. Just floating in air.

Then,in the last 1000 feet between me & certain death, it was no longer quiet as the ground was coming at me like a fuckin' Mac truck. This is where I started screaming. ( Not kidding! )
But I managed to remember to pull my harness to give me a bit of lift, bend my knees & to roll into a landing.
As I laid there on my back I watched my chute fall directly over me like a shroud. ( nice imagery, huh!? :P )

Do it man. If you survive you will never forget it! And when you & your girlfriend celebrate later, alone, youll have a very lusty outlook on life. Uh, if you survive...

The time I went skydiving, I was shouting just for the fun of shouting. Like on a roller coaster, you know? Only I couldn't hear myself over the wind noise. I tried yelling even louder... Still couldn't hear myself. It was pretty weird =)

It was a lot of fun though. It's something I honestly think every human being should experience at least once in their life. You owe it to yourself to at least give it a try.

I am only scared of heights when it has something to measure it by, Like a tall building and looking down etc. I don't think looking at the Earth from 30,000 ft is going to seem scary at all since you have nothing to scale it with.

When I look out of a aeroplane I just see great big jigsaw puzzles

Besides, I can't think of any better way to die, its instant, no pain and its better if you go head first for sure. That would give me all the more reason to go again and again and again and you won't be alone, someone will be with you for comfort until the last second.

With lots of Love,

Neorichie.
