Hudson Selection Vol. 2: Star Soldier

Post by Kaiser »

My impressions from that :)
First you have on main menu 3 play modes (Normal,2 minute,5 minute) and 2 other options (Options, omake) i played game today and it's remake of the STAR SOLDIER from NES :) Game is pretty good as for a remake

Game is 10 stages long it start from easy(1) to very hard(final) difficulty is balanced i think :D now let's get to the gameplay mechanics

1.you have two type of shots
a.Rapid(Youre holding shot button)
b.Single-shot(little more powerful than rapid)

2.You have blaster weapon it's close-range weapon which can be used only near enemies or bonuses after you use it you must wait because it charges for next use

3.Now to the bonuses :) there's always hidden Z yellow box in level after you discovered it destroy it to gain bonus from 100 to higher number(i didn't found bonus higher than 4000) and after beating certain enemies the y will drop some blue triangle gems which gives you 100 points sometimes there are yellow instead of blue which gaves you 500 points, here's also 1UP bonus which can be found throughout game (i found 2 or 3)

4.After power-up'ing to the max you have shield which is capable of protecting from 3 shots but crashing into enemy doesn't protect :)

5.And i found that there's 3 extends (i didn't discover more) 100,000 500,000 1,000,000 game is really fun

6.Music is good :) most favourite track is Stage 2

7.Most crazy lasered level is stage 6 watch out for it's main boss because he's rotating 360 degrees + shots many big lasers

It's worth buying this game too bad that i can't show screenshots from that game :( and here's the judgement

+Fun gameplay which is not boring
+Balanced difficulty
+Blaster weapon maybe risky to use in boss battles but it's use is capable of destroying boss faster
+10 stages which took me about hour
+Good music
-One enemy which after destroying him he changes into invicible floating sphere
-Repetiviness of Face mid-boss

Overall 9/10

I like it too. My only beef with the thing is that it's not digital compatible. In other words, no arcade stick to use with, just a Dualshock 2...

If you get the Cube port, evidently you can use the Cube Digital Controller to play it.

When you lose one of your shields (IIRC, I haven't played the game for a long time) your shot powers down. When you grab a power up, you get a smart bomb but your shot doesn't upgrade... What's the logic behind this? I'm not sure this always work like this. Can you upgrade your weapon??

IIRC you have to lose all 3 of your shields before you can power up again. As for the logic behind it, your guess is as good as mine.

If I get hit, I'll usually eat 2 more hits on purpose then take a P item. Going without full power just to hold on to the other 2 shields makes no sense.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Sorry for the couple-month-old thread revival, but does anyone know what the criteria for unlocking the Omake items are? I kind of randomly got the last one (TV CF#2 or whatever, the television ad with Takahashi) after playing the Caravan modes for a bit, but nothing since. Might have a bit to do with my lack of skill at (or rather, lack of patience with) the main game.

PS2 version here, if it matters. Damn do I need an autofire pad.

I seem to recall clearing the game opened up the rest. A feat made considerably easier by an autofire pad, yes. I had troubles getting past the fouth stage, but after getting a cheap third party joypad with autofire I cleared the whole thing.

Like the game, but when the difficulty comes in major part from keeping up a good rate of fire, something's horribly wrong. Yes, I know that's how many old-school shmups do it, and the game is a remake/sequel of the very old-school Soldier series. But all of the original Soldier games have a proper autofire built in.

Oh well, glad they fixed it for the PSP port.

Well, the Mr. Driller game does look pretty sweet, OT! I've read great things about Hudson Selection Adventure Island, as well.

But, where's the best place to find GC Star Soldier? I can NEVER find it on Ebay. Play-Asia has it, but the PS2 rev. is cheaper-at least on that site. I wish the Freeloader was cheaper as well.

A couple months ago there was some shopping website that listed this game, along with the Adventure Island and Bonk remakes coming to the US, but I haven't seen anything since. I wouldn't hold your breath.

Here's the old thread for it. http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.ph ... ght=hudson

The release dates on that site say they came out last year, yet they didn't. I don't think there's much hope, which sucks because I would have liked to play all three of them. Oh well, there's still importing.

How many different bosses are in the game? Bonk and Adventure Island added a lot of variety to their predecessors. Just wondering about this one.

One of the best remakes evers, I really need to update this run, as I've improved since. But it still doesn't top the scoreboard here if I recall correctly - the leader here's 2min score is an 85 ___ I think. Best I've done to date I think is 79/80___ I think? Anyhow, putting disc in system now....

I'm not sure why you say that...
but,
I can agree about F#@* this game toward the PS2 rev, as my ASCii Stick joystick isn't recognized by Star Soldier

The thing that makes this suck even more is that the Gamecube rev supports digital controllers like the Hori Gameboy Player Controller just fine.
wtf was Hudson thinking by not supporting digital joystick control on the PS2?!?

Is the PS2 and Gamecube games the same? Are they the same game as the PSP one? I always thought they were all the same game.. or at least I had heard the PSP game is a port of the Gamecube one... but I remember seen a video of the PSP game, and it's played on vertical, while the PS2 doesn't have a tate mode.

PS2 and GC games are the same, the PSP one is a remixed port of sorts. There's the natural tate, two whole new ships, you don't have to tap the fire button just to get decent firepower out...might be some other smaller differences. So yeah, different games.

The PSP game ROCKS, and is definitely a must-own if you have a PSP. Great shmup! The music really rocks, too.
