Cliches You Wish Would Just Burn in Hell

Post by UnscathedFlyingObject »

Books, movies, videogames, real life, etc. your pick.

- Amnesia characters (simple rule: I won't play a game if the main character has amnesia)

- Feathers suddenly appearing (do they kill a chicken every time something dramatic happens in a game?)

- Sakura suddenly appearing (um ok it makes shit sense if there are no trees around)

- Rain when something bad happens (Bad things happen in sunny days too)

- Chirpy characters (I.Want.To.Strangle.Them)

- You sneeze when somebody talks behind your back (let's rule out pneumonia as a reason)
"Sooo, what was it that you consider a 'good salary' for a man to make?"
"They should at least make 100K to have a good life"

Movies-
Guy kneeling (often in the rain) by dead loved one yelling "NOOOOO!!" with his arms outstretched while the camera pans out. Or any variation of that.

-Band-aids that cure everything.

-Sempai characters dying to save their subordinates. (Excused if they go out in a blaze of glory.)

-Old warrior guys who keep on fighting to the death even though their army and commanding officers have been defeated.
Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.

- The guy somehow being an idiot, while the woman is oh so smart on virtually any subject.

- Hot shot pilots making God awful one-liners to show how cool they are.

- Anything involving "American Pie" or "National Lampoon".

- Saturday Night Live.

anything super seiyan like or DBZ in general....
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

- RPGs that give you virtually nothing to start with, yet expect you the save the whole damned world...

"The kingdom is in danger, and we call upon you to save us all from the evil that approaches. Now here's a stick and five bucks. GO FORTH AND CONQUER!"

You're a king! Gimme some money you cheap bastard, so I can buy something other than the absolute weakest armor and weaponry. At least let me get the second weakest.

How inconsequential characters die instantly when shot but main characters always hang on to life just long enough to deliver their last speech.

Anime - main character who doesn't possess much physical skill, but once their loved ones become threatened they hulk up and go super-crazy

American adult-humour cartoons - i'm just sick of seeing out-of-date, hackneyed English stereotypes portrayed in cartoons like Family Guy and South Park (apparantly England is populated solely by posh upper-class toffs or Dick Van Dyke-esque mockney speaking chimney sweeps, everyone has bad teeth, everyone loves cricket, drinks warm beer, loves rugby, or 'rugger' and everyone is a stern royalist).

This point applies to La Pucelle tactics (game) too, Croix always goes mad if Prier is about to be KILLED, he becomes overpowered ruthless guy

It can be done correctly though. See Planescape: Torment.

Bugs the hell out of me too. Hell, it bugs me in real life.

Often hilarious though. But why the hell do otherwise serious directors keep using that cliché? Silent inner torment or a sorrowful howl would be much more effective in those scenes.

The worst. Stopped being funny ages ago and is an insult to all the brave soldiers that died following orders with no clue what Hitler and co where up too. Why are they still enforcing WW2 propaganda 60 years later?
Oh well, at least German films about the war aren't trash, like Das Boot, Stalingrad and Downfall, although they are all guilty of white washing some aspects of the war a bit.

Movies mostly, though WW2 games and bad literature has copied it:
-If one of the characters shows the hero a photo of his family, he's written himself a death sentence. His death wont be instant so he can use his last breath to urge the main character to tell his wife and/or family that he loves them.

Movies and TV:
-Sex is boring and slow, happens under the covers (preferably silk ones, and by candlelight) and the woman never removes her top/bra.

-If it is your last day/week on the job, call in sick.
Trek trough the Galaxy on silver wings and play football online.

Man, those Nazis sure do get a bad rap. I tried explaining this to the people at the Jewish Community Center, but they wouldn't hear anything of it. Something about a lot of concentration. I dunno, I was getting tired of hearing them whine and moan about something that happened 60 years ago so I just shut it out.

Anywho, the cliches I hate:

Anime (Although I don't really watch much these days):

-Harem anime in general (Where there is one dopey guy getting chased by like a dozen different women)
-Every woman looking attractive (It's just not the case Japan, I'm sorry)

Movies:

-Explicitly explaining shit that doesn't need to be explained (Most likely for the dumbasses in my home country)
- Ending a movie in a way that conveniently segues into a sequel.

It can be done correctly though. See Baroque.
Also, I like it when the amnesia the character suffers from isn't "i have no past, yet I need to look for answers /magus1", but constant lapses of memory, like "what was I doing 5 minutes ago?". This should be used more often though.

RPGs that have 10 hours of really boring fetch quests for uncle so and so ect before you get to the real story or any excietment.

The guy and girl who are complete opposites and argue with each other constantly MUST be a couple by the end. Oftentimes with almost no "transition" at all - one second they hate each others' guts, and then suddenly they're sappy as all get-out.

I hate the whole Darth Vader-Obi Wan kind of relationship thing found in a lot of movies and games. The game starts or has a scene where your dad (or trainer) meets someone he trained while he was younger and all that BS.

It was cool the first time... I hate it now.

Modern gaming, and now this. UFO you sure have a lot to complain about.

I hate that cliche how the loudest person who constantly complains is always the last person to get eaten by the T-Rex.

"Hello, and welcome to our formerly peaceful village, Metrosexual Amnesiac Emo Kid With A Spiky Haircut And A Humongous Sword With Many Other Non-Battle-Related Implications. Here, our village full of strong able-bodied men has been waiting for a brave one who can rid us of the Unnamable Beast With No Name That No One Talks About that has been ravaging our crops and killing our herds. Will you help us? Without our herds or crops, all of our pitchforks, hammers, picks, axes, torches, sickles, hoes, machetes, staves and other incredibly sharp and pointy (and potentially harmful) tools of our trade are useless!"
