Now I understand why this was done. Kudos to the PCE port team for not butchering R-Type when they couldn't fit all the game data on the card.
I'm curious, is there some sort of extra ending sequence on the original R-Type release for PCE to make it feel more like a complete game? I see about the extra boss there.

Naw, it has the same ending as the arcade version. Part 1 had a short scene of your R-9 landing on an Earth ship, though, so that HuCard didn't just abruptly end after four stages. And the PC-CD version had cutscenes after every two stages and a new ending. Its scene after stage 4 also showed you landing on a carrier, which was a nice bit of continuity.
The new stage + boss in the Master System port is more interesting than the new boss in the TG16/PCE/PC-CD version, but the 8-bit game isn't near-arcade perfect like its 16-bit cousin.
R-Types had an incredibly bad CG replacing the original ending, despite having a pretty cool opening CG.

I played through the first loop of the R-Type I & II Jap Hucards recently, yes there's is sprite flicker but I found them perfectly playable.
I could play the original on MAME but I'm such a huge PCE fan that even its faults endear it to me more.
I've not played through the coin-op but apparently there's a new boss added to the sixth stage on the PCE version.
Others that spring to mind are:
Magical Chase
Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire
Coryoon
sylphia

R-Type II was released for Amiga.Zebra Airforce wrote:As far as I know R-Type II was only released on Super Nintendo as Super R-Type.

IMO its one of the best shmups on the system. I haven't played much of the Arcade version, so I can't comment if it's a good port or not, but it's an excellent game.

R-Type II on amiga received harsh criticism for the lack of an autofire button, iirc.Shatterhand wrote:IMO its one of the best shmups on the system. I haven't played much of the Arcade version, so I can't comment if it's a good port or not, but it's an excellent game.
Anyway, the conversion itself isn't amazing, but the Amiga music is outstanding. Much, Much better than the arcade. I don't have mp3s with me but just hearing the first stage would be a proof.

As of 1990, the-then upcoming Super Famicom / SNES was originally supposed to be getting a straight port of R-Type II, but Irem had the idea to create a semi-new R-Type using some completely new levels, as well as some of the R-Type II levels. The result, Super R-Type.
R-Type III was a complete new R-Type in every way. The SFC/SNES never got the arcade R-Type games like PCE/TG16/PCE CD, X68000 and PS1 did.

Erm, the amiga controller usually had just one button. How the heck would it have auto-fire and still have the charge beam?Turrican wrote:R-Type II on amiga received harsh criticism for the lack of an autofire button, iirc.Shatterhand wrote:IMO its one of the best shmups on the system. Come on, Shatter... You perfectly know that developers could have easily implemented an optional 2nd button control. Turrican 3? Lionheart?Shatterhand wrote:Erm, the amiga controller usually had just one button. Really? I didn't remember this. I used space in fact.Shatterhand wrote:yeah yeah, I know, but it wasn't the standard. Actually, if I remember correctly, the 2nd button on R-Type II could be used with the correct function: Send in and out the pod. (1 button players would have to use the space button to do it)
Well, anyway I was just reporting what Eggebrecht once said - that the lack of autofire had been criticized back then.
I still think R-Type II on the amiga is above the average amiga shmup. Too bad Huelsbeck wasn't involved for another title tune...
