New Magic Engine out

Post by Ed Oscuro »

http://www.magicengine.com/

Just tried it out - works with my old keyfile just fine, and there are some notable/interesting improvements:

- doesn't take forever and a day to load up into fullscreen mode
- when listing ROMs available it will make the overdumps/etc. you got with your fullset slightly grayed out - they're still selectable though. Not sure this is actual GoodTools integration though; maybe that's for the future.
- Uhh I forget, but it's Magic Engine, works great, go get it for Windowz (no Mac version yet, sadly).

MagicEngine used to be great, but I don't see much point with Mednafen available now.

Thanks for the tip, I'll check this one out.

I upgraded to 1.0 but went back to .99 since I prefer the sound in .99 (less accurate or no).

Someday I'll get one of those sweet white PC Engines. No real desire for a Duo as I'm not into the shmups

There's also Ootake, it too is free and plays a bit better than Magic Engine, though I can't bash ME, I won one of those fangled key files off the ME site long ago (Ed even uses mine, he's cursed with my name all over his emulator forever!).

Does one of those other emulators have good scrolling? I use magic engine and vert games all ripple (using vga resolution).

For Neon,

Aw man, you won't regret picking a Turbo Duo...plays all the import CD-Rom2 and Super CD-Rom2 games without a hitch. It's worth the trouble to hunt down an Arcade Card Duo Hu-Card upgrade just to play Hudson Soft's Arcade CD-Rom2 formatted Ginka Fukei Densetsu Sapphire shmup game on the ol' Duo console. There's nothing like playing with the classic hardware in your hands... ^_~

What about Drac X, and random other games like Kaze Kiri and that other Ninja action game I bought and forget the name of?

There are multiple v-sync modes available in the newest Magic Engine, according to a settings entry - I didn't fool with it, though.

Did they finally allow custom fucking resolutions like they did in v0.99? Basically my AVGA was useless w/ the most stable build, and I was told that it was "just a matter of time" starting about 2 years ago.

Not exactly, you can choose from a large list at startup (there's also a checkbox option to show those resolution settings or not at each startup). What resolution do you need?

1600x1200 was marked as 16-bit only. It looks exactly like the 32-bit setting, except you get more text. Recommended if you can do it.

I should try this out on my laptop (62 Hz, 1920x1200) to see how it handles that system.

it seems like one setting is best for vert and the other is best for horizontal, but the vert one is still bad at my res (lowest vga- can't remember specific).

320x240 @ 15khz
v.99 supports it. 1.0 does not.

MEFX apparently does as well. I was told they'd be putting it in the next one... like 2 years ago.

The lowest I see is 640x480, so apparently they had only PC displays in mind. No setting for scanlines/second setting (or Hz setting) either.

They've never had that resolution in the menu. You had to set it in the cfg file. But hey, it worked.
