PS2 component cables

Post by Etrian »

I'm having an issue with the PS2 component cables that I've had for about a year. My CRT will run my PS2 with it, but the colour changes to a yellowish/darkish shade after a certain amount of play time (could be 30 minutes, could be 2 hours). It's rather annoying.

At first I thought it was originally a fault with my PS2, so I hauled out my Japanese PS2 and played some Galuda. But then I noticed that bullets were blue.. in kakusei mode.

Does anyone know if there's any reliable PS2 component cables that aren't made by Sony? Or do I have to cough up $50 to get some official ones?

I got a generic ebay fodder cable a while ago to replace my Sony cable (which died in a tragic soldering accident). Think I paid about 8 bucks for it.
No issues thus far, and the quality seems just as good. I would crack open the connector and see if it's just a bad joint or something before you splurge on a new cable, though.

^^^I just ordered the monster cables from Circuit City for instore pickup for a grand total of $9.70.

I could be mistaken but I don't believe the first party cables are readily available anymore.

Yup. Sony (and everyone else) is phasing out the PS2 component cables in favor of the PS3 component cables.

PS3 component cables are 100% compatible with PS2—and theoretically PS1, though I don't have a PS1 with me to test them on.

Unless there was a pressing reason to get RGB-esque quality from a PS1 component is overkill.

I've tried my PS2 component cables on my PS1, and they don't work, you get a bunch of wavy lines and crap. I don't think the PS1 is capable of outputting component.

I'll take your word for it, since my conjecture was entirely based on how the PS1 & 2 have the same AV pinouts. :P

They're still being sold on Play-Asia for $30 each, but they're currently on back order.

My brother uses a Monster component cable and it has the same problems.

Plus there's this thing, which makes me want to avoid Monster cables altogether.

Back in October of 2000, when SCEA first sold it's 1st-party official PS2 Component Video cable, it says on the back, that it isn't compatible with the Playstation nor the PSone console (because of lack of Component Video output from the get-go)...on a whim, I thought I'd try it out and no cigar..... ^_~

Wouldn't you get RGB out of a PS1 by using a component cord?
Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.

I'm not sure if it would be sync-on-green or missing the sync entirely.

The Japanese 21-pin RGB cable for the PSX platform will work just fine with PSX, PSone, PS2 and PS3 for your RGB needs as will an European Scart cable also... ^_~

National Console Support Inc. based out of New York in the USA sells the Sony Official PS3 Component Video Cables and they ship internationally:

The above listed Official PS3 Component Video cables will come with packaging that would be of the Japanese PS3 variety but it works like a charm on any PS2 & PS3 consoles regardless of country region...

You can't get component on PS1. It just can't do it.

PS2 and PS3 component cables are the same. I'm using a set of Pelican PS3 component cables on my ps2, and everything is nice, crisp, clear, and no color changes.

PS1 - Launch 1994
Component cable - Launch somewhere in HD era (probably 1999+)

So unless Sony changed the spec of the psone, hired a Delorean, I think we safely assume it was a non issue.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.
