The pen is definitely underrated. I open/move boxes all day at work sometimes, and all I use is a pen. I hate using box cutters/knives. I'm too accident prone.

I have a pocket knife...well actually, it clips to my belt. I use it for fishing cutting line and so forth. Lately I've been leaving it aboard my boat. If you carry it around in your pocket its illegal...(Detroit, MI) and chances are you'll get picked up for CCW if you happen to be north of 8 Mile.

I've been doing this to but a pen is'nt as god as a knife for opening boxes. I end up destroying lots of fine boxes that could have been saved using a pocket knife.

I've actually never destroyed a box by using a pen. I have destroyed a few pens though. I only use it to cut the tape, so I've got it down now. =)

My friend's boyfriend got arrested for having a box cutter on him, because he forgot to leave it at work. He had literally just gotten off of work too.

I don't usually carry anything these days, but at times I have carried a Swisscard (basically a credit card sized thing that has a small knife, scissors and a number of other tools in it) in my wallet on occasion. I don't think there's much of anything in one of those that would be effective as a weapon though.

I carry a 5" switchblade typically when I'm in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota. For protection. Otherwise, don't really carry it around.
