Hyper Duel has 9 votes and Blast Wind has 5 votes.

Generally I'm the only one voting for those two.

I've been voting for Hyper Duel for years. Another underappreciated shmup.

The game where you're encouraged to not move.

Judging from the votes so far, way too few people have played Raiden DX.

I couldn't see what was going on the only time I was able to play it on an old cab that needed maintenance (and also less glare from overhead lights).

Yeah, not moving in Hyper Duel doesn't increase your score THAT much. :p

Its mostly just knowing how to pull off the bonus level right. But eh, I don't really play Hyper Duel (or any Tecno Soft shmup that isn't Blast Wind) for score.

Edit:
Props to gameoverdude for even more Hyper Duel/Blast Wind votes. These might actually make the top 25 or something. :o :o :o

I think it'd be awesome if the site were co-run by 4-5 different people with differeing views on shmups who were willing to actively contribute content, information, and reviews. But alas, tis only a dream.
It once was, for some time Akira, Felix the Cat and... erm.. some other guy I forgot the name were running the site. I actually found the site because I knew Akira from other forum. To be honest, Malc never actually "dropped" the site, he begun running a smaller site about shmups, but it was very small.

At some point Malc said he wanted it back, and Akira handled it back to Malc nicely, merging both the "old" site and Malc's new smaller site. (At that point, neither Felix the Cat or the other guy were around anymore).

Though I must agree, I really think Malc could use some help to keep the site updated. He doesn't need to handle it completely to someone else, but I am sure there are a lot of people willing to help, and I can't see a sensible reason to refuse the help.

Maybe we could talk with Malc about making a new shmups site. This one could stay alive, and the new one could start from ground zero, and the forum could be linked from both sites. Or maybe even, if Malc agrees with that, has both sites linked from the shmups.com domain. It would be a great service to the genre and the fans I believe.

I think sometimes we don't have any idea of the influence range of this site and this forum. I am pretty sure we make a fair impact on the gaming culture... I mean, why did Triangle Service actually called their game a "shmup" on their site? I know the term wasn't invented here, but I am pretty sure about 80% of the people using it know it because of this site.

I think I'll pm Malc asking if he feels to post his Top 25 shmups. It would be cool to hear. If he has voted in the annual poll, it must have been in the first or the second.

I may stick Nexzr on my list. I got it this last year from Wolfgames for about 60 bones. Last time I checked he had both editions in stock. Definitely a good game, but maybe a little sparse?

Certainly. If Nexzr had received a VC release instead of Lords of Thunder, then people would be voting for it now instead of Lords.

Makes sense.. I hope it does have a VC release eventually, though they'd probably have to subtitle it.

Everyone who voted for Lords has also voted for arcade-only and Japan-only shooters. To have played these games, they'd have to be either collectors or emulator users; in either case, they wouldn't just be subject to whatever the VC puts in front of their faces.

It's OK that you like Nexzr better, Ceph, but I don't think the VC has affected its standing in the polls.

I'm too lazy to look it up now, but would you mind counting the votes Lords got last year, thus disproving what you wrote? ;)

It's a fairly popular game. Honorable mention last year.

IIRC, Lords of Thunder was highly praised several years ago (Network54 days). I also remember Batsugun generally being considered mediocre. Weird how times change (or my memory is lying to me).

It's awesome that no one really justified why Lords isn't worthy of much praise, exactly like no one explained why Nexzr is, despite saying "it really is that good." :)

I think there used to be more respect among the shmuppers for old made-for-console shooters, even though I know a fair amount of it was nostalgia-driven. It's definitely a collection of distinct styles, and the experience is not exactly replaced by later games.

If I remember correctly I first played Nexzr roughly 4-5 years ago, so it's not a case of nostalgia. Took me a while to discover because it's pretty well hidden and there's little information available. Seems that most of those who have actually played it agree that it's one of the (if not the) best PCE shmups.

Edit: typo

Allow first person shooters and then I'll vote. I feel bad voting for games I tried 3 times but never actually somewhat understood.

5 days left. Don't forget to vote for Nexzr. It's got good music, too, you know.

Too bad there's only one track of it. Doesn't play on either the first or second stage either :(
