Nice JoshF Moebius rules!

And CMoon I have never opened an issue of Jonah Hex. He was that crazy cowboy type right?

I'm savoring the illustrated Frankenstein like fine wine. Berni Wrightson's work is of incomparable genius. Shit, so is Mary Shelley's.

Aye, although one would argue that his contribution to film outshines his comic book work.
And if not for him, there wouldn't be any Panzer Dragoon.

Aye, it is my second favorite edition surpassed only by the unique style and power of Lynd Ward's Illustrations: http://www.geocities.com/orbofnight1816/ward

I owned (maybe still do?) the Jp version of PD just for the Moebius cover.

Thread-Necro!

Just picked up the latest TPB of Powers and man, I'd almost forgotten how good it is.
It really is Bendis's baby and it totally makes up for all the Green-Webbing/Steroid Green Goblin of Ultimate Spiderman (although, to be fair, that comic is written with other audiences in mind).
It's one of the few comics I'd really like to be transfered to TV, provided it would be on HBO or Showtime or some other network that wouldn't censor the hell out of it.

I'd also like to get out some of my Mark Millar hate!
His Ultimates stuff was cute, right until the Wife beating drama.
Then he went and made Wanted, the most overrated piece of masturbatory fantasy trash of all time (with a movie coming up, what a surprise).
Then he went and made the stupidity that is Civil War.
Don't get me wrong, I love the concept and it produced some worthwhile material by other author, but when it tries to justify an Orwellian police state by pointing out how Captain America doesn't use myspace, I stopped caring about Marvel all together.

Sweet thread. I recommend:

Dirty Pair - Adam Warren (or in fact pretty much any of his comics)
Squee - Jhonen Vasquez
Bear Immortal - Jamie Smart.

Ah Mark Millar. I used to really dig him, but i've totally lost interest. Characterization is poor, and his plots tend to end with a whimper. However, I was a big fan of his Authority(especially the first arc). Wanted had some insanely painful dialogue. I have no idea why that book was rated so well.

Now, as for Bendis...I know he's popular, but damn, his plots always end with a whimper(excpet for Goldfish and couple of other stories), and his stories are always so S-L-O-W. If i'm going to read more decompressed stuff, i'd rather go with Brubaker, who at least packs each issue with a lot of interesting stuff, even if the overall story is moving slowly.

Anyone here like New Frontier? God that was good. It has an animated film coming out soon.

Glad to see there's some comic buffs here.

WOW, some awesome taste here. I can't believe Popbot was already recommended, anything by Ashley Wood is a must for me simply because the art is so unique and imaginative, plus Zombies VS Robots anyone?

I'm a huge Bode fan, Cobolt60, Cheech Wizard etc, they are legendary and hugely responsible for what is known as hiphop art including graffiti. Plus Mark Bode is from my area and I even went to school with his daughter and took some private comic art lessons with him for an internship back 10 years ago or so.

I bought the Absolute eddition of New Frontier on a whim and I enjoyed it quite a bit. The story is well done but the retro style art and gorgeous colors really make it something special.

It has made me strangely obsessed with the DC universe. After reading Kingdom Come, Crisis on Infinite Earths, Identity Crisis, and the collection of Allan Moore's DC stories it seems like the it's is just an overly convoluted continuity meant to sell comics. Having said that, I've enjoyed a lot of these storries. I've just given up on understanding all the references in DC books.

After some of your reccomendations, I really want to check out the "Showcase Presents Sergent Rock" collection but I just know that i'll be wishing that it was in color the whole time i'm reading it.

I do the odd weekend shift at a London Comic shop (Orbital) just for the staff discount and the good times with the other staff and regulars...

I've just discovered The Invisibles, which is just incredible. Super clever, epic, intimate, odd, makes living in/visiting a city seem totally different.

Kind of fit's in with Strider's starting posts but I'd also recommend these exceedingly...

Preacher
DMZ (An absolute must read)
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (red the lot just to get to The Black Dossier)
The Boys
Alan Moores Swamp Thing series
V for Vendetta
The newer Jonah Hex run
Scalped
Loveless
The new Garth Ennis Dan Dare

And if like me you like good war stories...

The Garth Ennis Enemy Air Ace
The newest two Sgt. Rock stories
Battler Brittain
War Stories
303's great too...
The Mammoth Book of War stories contains some jaw-dropping classic war tales

Finally - I'm afraid I too didn't like Watchmen....

OK - it's not that I didn't like it. I was just underwhelmed after my fellow comic nerds hyped it up so much. And I so loved V for Vendetta, and everything else he's done...

Just got the DC Showcase of Enemy Ace - that's incredible, and found some 1959 Battler Brittains - beautifully written!

Pride of Bahgdad has me all excited right now. Amazing one of graphic novel...

And Incognegro...

UK comic fans might like to know I served Lenny Henry recently in one of my one off shifts at the Comic Shop. He likes Avengers and Spider Man.

Other celebrity regulars at the shop include Rab C Nesbit, Joe Cornish and Edgar Wright. Nice to know there's some English celebs with time for comics!

i used to love these growing up:

Mortadelo y Filemón - Wikipedia

its a spanish comic series, that actually has been translated into many different languages (even the queen's english as Mort & Phil)

whenever i was in spain, i would stock up on as much as i could of this series. the entire thing is absurdist slap stick, as far as i could understand it at the time anyway (still not fluent )

not saying its necessarily poetry, but this stuff takes me back just like Tin Tin does, all the racist shit notwithstanding. come to think we had quite of a few of those books around the house in french (original language?).

I have to put in a vote for Hiroaki Samura's Blade of the Immortal - surely one of the finest Manga ever.
Even if you don't like Manga, it's an incredible series - the only problem is Dark Horse only get around to releasing one every six months, which is driving me bananas.

Just take your time with it - it's like a TV serial, and definitely not to be read in a day.
I usually did a chapter at a time, and like most Alan Moore stuff, the interim newspaper sections are verbose and sometimes laborious - but they do fill in the gaps in cementing that world he's created.

Watchmen is awesome. The film will be shit.
