Anyone playing Exception?

Post by Square King »

It's a pretty unique and beautiful shmup complete with online co-op. Haven't really heard about it around here. Basically, it rocks. I'm a sucker for glowing blue lasers.

Ooh. Shiny.

By demo, is it a preview or a "gotta buy" situation?

By the look of the game the creators are apparently exceedingly fond of Gradius V's Type 2 options and Rez's stage 4 boss.

I acquired it through alternate means, so I'm not sure. ;) I think it's a preview.

Ok.

*ahem*

HOLY FREAKING HECK.

This game is pure genius.

I just was messing with the demo now....

Omigod.

Ok. I officially need this damn game.

SOMEONE TELL ME WHERE I CAN GET THIS!!!!!

*explodes*

I love this scoring system. I love it. Just love it. Awesomeness.

Stage 3's damn walls are a little annoying..... I didnt figure out until about 2 minutes ago exactly how to deal with them.

This dang game is so blasted awesome, now I cant even think straight.

Though I cant make a lick of sense of all the options in the config. Fortunately though I could see where the resolution one was.

Dang Japanese text.

And in case anyone gives a flip, my highest score for the demo, in "Heavy" mode (I havent tried Excess yet, I've a feeling that one might be a bit much for now), is about 53,000.

Then I did a second run and got like, half of that, lol, after crashing into a buncha stupid things. First run, I beat the boss at the very end of the demo. Second run, I died on a wall :P

I had nearly the top high score for a while on this, but they reset them with the latest patch. Really fun game, but very easy on Normal difficulty.

Last I checked you couldn't buy it though, as they sold out extremely fast. Might be for sale again now though.

Looks awesome. However it doesn't draw text on my computer, just blank buttons. Anyone knows how to fix it?

EDIT: Problem solved. I forgot to to turn on support for Asian languages in Windows.

I tried it, couldn't get over the fact that I was just blowing up little cubes forever. Don't care how deep the scoring system is, or how many lighting effects they added. If it's not visceral enough, it's boring to me :/

How do you do this, exactly? My gf was having the same problems.

And has anyone tried out the multiplayer yet? Udderdude, I know what you mean, but I just think online co-op should be done more often in shmups.

Control panel -> Regional and language options -> languages -> check "install files for East Asian languages"

It might require Windows CD

wow.. this game looks great, yeah sure im not much for freeroaming shooters and the cube theme gets kinda tiresome but aside from that.. nice.

Where can I check for it, though? That's the question.

Not surprised at all to hear it sold out. But I'll be looking to pick this up a bit later on anyway (really low on cash right now, thank you Brawl...)

And am I the only one having issues getting this running fast?

Im not sure what it is, but it's quite a drain on the machine here (and this machine isnt exactly slow, I'll say that much).

I tried messing with the settings, didnt actually DO anything.....

How is this running for most of you?

From what a friend and I have gathered, in exception_config, you have a panel for resolution (and a fullscreen option), several graphics options (including VSync, pixel shaders and etc), name for saving high scores, showing FPS and objects on the screen, a processor type option (if you have multiple cpus)...and the rest is pretty self-explanatory. Dunno what the configurable number in the lower left does.

It runs OK on my newish laptop, but it does lag a little in the intense areas. I can support all of the options except for the third, so it doesn't have all the effects you see in the videos.

Here's a screencap for the resident Japanese literate:

Apologies for the Thread Necromancy, but I thought this might be useful to anyone still having config trouble with the game:

As for the game itself, Exception is great. No, there's not much variety in graphical shapes, but I find it works well with the game's overall theme of "a lone block of data going against an entire system". The gameplay mechanics are fun, as is the scoring system which keeps you involved and constantly switching between the Laser, Homing Laser, and Catapult.

And you have to love the various nods to Gradius V -- the primary laser that was clearly inspired by the Type 2 Option, the Stage 2 boss "Function" has an attack that's very similar to one used by Beacon, and the fight against Stage 3's boss "Iterator" will surely give you vibes of BlasterCannonCore.

Exception's replay function is also pretty damn neat, as you can watch user's replays as well as watch and upload your own. There's some good expert plays on the higher modes that you should watch, including one particular replay of the mode Future by a user named Keith that will show you how ridiculous the game can get.

From the main menu, go to Record, select Future and All Stage on the right, and double-click "Keith: 825,876". Watch this (hold the LMB mouse buttons/gamepad buttons to fast forward), and you'll agree that Excess is a fucking misnomer compared to Future. The game is very likely to slow down in agreement on your PC.

Yes, thanks! Now we just need to figure out the online multiplayer business...it has a tendency to crash on my Vista laptop whenever I switch from single player to client.

More thread necromancy: Exception is getting an arcade port on a jamma board?

同人STG「exception」がアーケード化

Could anyone clear this? Success is behind this. I wonder if the arcade version will be improved or have different patterns, although seeing it has a "Windows XP embedded" version on it, it could just be the PC version running with full resources on it.

Thanks for posting this! I love the more simplified 3 button controls (whereas the PC version uses 6!) If they release an arcade upgrade to the PC version I think I'll have to buy this.

Also interesting to see this new SkoPro PC based arcade platform, similar to original Type X with Windows XPe.

I hope it could mean we might end up seeing more PC ports to the arcade and viceversa and scream "Suck it up, Cave!". Yeah, failed trolling attempt.

i-saint has a guide "for foreigners" to get exception through Melonbooks in case anyone is interested in purchasing it. It's 1.5k yen or so if I remember right.

I liked the new GUI for the arcade version, far more polished and clean. If only the net code could be fixed to actually make it work anywhere outside Japan this game would rock even more and we could really have nice matches in Exception Conflict trying to survive the 30 cubic waves of doom or some PVPLOL in Deathmatch mode, but with cubes.

Sorry to bump a fairly old thread. I am very interested in this game, and it's nice to see that it is getting a full arcade release.

Does anyone have any more information on it? I know there where loke tests, but does anyone know an actual release date?

Success seems to like to port their games to consoles, but since this is from an indie dev originally (from what I understand), does this stand a chance of being ported as well? If it is, I pray for it to be on 360!

Does anyone know ANYTHING? :?
