Virtual On Oratario Tangram: We Are The Champions!

Post by undamned »

I'm somewhat of a late bloomer in the realm of VOOT (long time appreciator of VO in general, though :D) and have been doing some digging lately.

Apparently Sega held an official tournament for VOOT players called "We Are The Champions." Here is Sega's official page on the tourny:

There was also a DVD from the event put out by enterbrain, according to insertcredit:

I found a few of the final rounds (3/3). Pretty awesome skills:

holy damn, serious shit. never got a chance to play it with the twin stick setup. made me cry, when i first found these boards, and found out i was doing it wrong by playing with the stock controller. great design work in this game as well.
I have no sig whatsoever.

Other trivia: Sega hired a bunch of popular Tokyo DJs of the time to come up with a (the?) soundtrack. Shinkawa, Tomo, Yo-C, even Ken Ishi I believe. They were on a short leash from what I understand though.

There were a lot of mess ups for the Cypher player, and even then Cypher vs. Grys-Vok wouldn't be too much of a problem unless you just really botched things up (see match 2).

But, given that they're playing with twin sticks, that is very impressive. If it was with controllers, eh, I'd be way more critical, but with twin sticks, thats good stuff.

I came across those videos a while ago when I suddenly took my very first interest in Virtual On (not a single VO arcade machine was present in my area ever, so I couldn't get into it). That's definitely some high level shit being displayed.

Since they were already very successful with giving VO:OMG the Sega Ages treatment by porting it to the PS2 (highly recommended), they should do the same with the arcade version of Virtual-On: Oratorio Tangram. Aside from providing longtime fans of the series with more action and possibly drawing in new fans, it would offset the bad taste that Virtual-On Marz left in the mouths of so many.

One question: How well was VO: Force received compared to VOOT?

VO Force was pretty much Marz without the mission-based structure from what I remember. In other words, it sucked.

HELL YES!!! I can't believe how good some of these Sega Ages iterations are. First Treasure Box, then Cyber Troopers Virtual-On show the quality I'd expect from the best of the best emulators out there (in terms of accuracy and customisation) rather than a budget PS2 retro release (and then some, if you care about extra content). One can tell it's made by geeks for geeks. Of course Sega people responsible for releasing (or not) their games overseas were pants on head out of the clue, or maybe just not interested in making the overseas geeks happy. Sometimes I wonder, do they even check out the prices of these games on second hand market?
The bad part is the lack of a dedicated Virtual-On controller for the PS2, but I believe you could build one for yourself.
