I think it's overrated, I sold mine a while back. I enjoyed my time playing it, but in the end I think it's slightly soulless, and wasn't holding my attention long term in the way some other games have.
Whether or not it's worth it at current prices though is entirely down to how much you like it, and what you can afford. If it went down to $300 I'd own one again for the odd game, for $700+ though? No, not for me.

Indeed, and shouldn't it be noted for the OP that our fearless leader has bought a couple of kits knew, which far surpass the price of a Ketsui board.Whether or not it's worth it at current prices though is entirely down to how much you like it,

The more time goes by, the more people seem to become fascinated by me, for whatever reason. I mean look at this "caincan" dude, for example. I've never heard of the poor bastard, and yet he has scoured my forums, pulled quotes from half a dozen different threads, in order to post them here and prove something.caincan wrote:compilation of your best quotes for others...![]()
"icycalm", you are hopeless.
I am going to have to ask you to stop posting in this forum. You are wasting my time and you are clogging up this thread with nonsense.
I will have to ask you to please stop posting in this thread.
plz save the bullshit for your blog (or your quantic semantic brain)
Thanks M. Ursini (no kidding he's a genius in communication ! hmm that's what says his degrees...)
As for the googlefights, what do these prove? That your usernames are more common on Google search results than mine? Well, I've got news for you, kids: Your usernames are not the only things that are common about you.
But whatever. As long as the moderators don't mind this nonsense, I sure as hell don't. In fact, I am enjoying it, just in case you can't tell.

Well done! A subtle pun from the gaming Hun.icycalm wrote:That your usernames are more common on Google search results than mine? Well, I've got news for you, kids: Your usernames are not the only things that are common about you.
I appreciated it, anyway
Also, I know that "Ed Oscuro" is a phrase that shows up often in Italian, such as here:

The question was answered pages back. How much $$$ do you want / can you afford to spend? Whats the point in schooling someone in Ecenomics when they ask if any game is worth $xxx. If you don’t understand supply & demand go back to school or read a book.
Ketsui is a very very good game. Personally I don’t think it’s cave’s best, but it’s well worth playing. TBH I wouldn’t buy any of the $400+ pcbs if I could play them elsewhere but I can’t, so I do.
I paid something like $1020 shipped with some art about 8 months ago. I’ve no intention of selling it so it’s obviously worth $700 to me.
I’m pretty sure if it were actually selling for $700 then this thread may have some more legitimacy.

problem with genius as icycalm are : their ego, unilateral speechs.... but even if they seem to be superior, it takes few times to understand they are losers too !
problem with ketsui and other "rare" things unemulated, we want know more and play them as they are uncommon. a paycheck for a game (or like BL mushi for "just" adjustments) is too a hard thing to understand, but that's life and what we do about it (feeling, stimulation, experience, accomplishment,...)

here's the way i look at it:
a game is only worth what a person is willing to pay for it.
that's why a game's "value" can go up and down - the quality of the game hasn't changed.
the way i look at PCB purchases (and other games too, really), is i take the amount in £ that i spent on it (X), deduct the price i sold it for (Y), and divide that by the number of credits played (Z).
(we assume that Y is less than or equal to X.)
now if (X - Y)/Z is less than or equal to 1, it is a good purchase.
so let's say that you buy ketsui for $800. the port comes out, and the game sells for a mean-average of about $500, and you've played around 300 credits on it. so it's cost you basically $1.00 a credit.
another guy might buy and sell for the same amounts, but only play 50 credits on it.
so it's all relative.

Come on, icycalm had some good quotes.
See this thread. It's ancient, but I remembered it because it's (at least seemed to me) the kind of level-headed reasoning that gives a convincing argument in a debate. I respect you forever man.
Aside from the retaliatory comments in this very thread, the posts are quite sensical to me.

I would say that the game is worth his money if you are really in love with it. If one buys the PCB at 700$ and plays an average of 5 games per day (say, 0.50$ per play), it's roughly 1 year of playing (0,5x5x365)=892,5$. A play costs 100 yen in Japan, so it should be even pricey to have such a pace.
Then, whenever one gets tired, one could be able to sell it at full price. It really boils down to interest and stability of price...if suddenly nobody wants it (price drops to e.g. 5$) and one finds it a pain to play it, it could be the worst waste of money ever, videogame-wise.
Icycalm's surname is Kierkegaard, mine's Ursini. I think you're confusing people and facts (and make some poorly thought insults...?).

The above is correct.icycalm wrote:You need to understand that what is worth the money to one person, may not be worth it to another.
It all depends on how much money you got, and how bad you want the game. Capish?
I'm suprised that a bunch of people, all with a common interest need to discuss the topic to this length. Most here are probably collectors of some sort or another, and value expensive purchases they've made in the past simply because its an addition to their collection they want no matter the cost.
Rocket science it's not, we all know exactly what this feels like whether we spend £100 on Radiant Silvergun or £500 on Ketsui.
Its up to the thread author to decide for himself how commited he is to the PCB scene or Cave collecting whether he buys original or port. He certainly doesn't need any more advice.

The whole topic is a bag of shit. Who would buy Ketsui as their 1st pcb?Ligersknight wrote:im thinking of buying my first pcb and arcade cab but is ketsui really worth 800-1000$? I have heard some very nice things about ketsui but what do you think?
If you were serious about playing shmups $1000 could be spent a lot better elsewhere.

Heh, good point, man. I think my first shmup PCB was either Feveron ($125 shipped) or Taito's Thundercade (which ran me like $25 for a whole kit).markedkiller78 wrote:The whole topic is a bag of shit. ketsui would make an excellent choice for first PCB i think.. great game not availible elsewhere, it could not be spent alot better elsewhere, it depends if you rather want one great game or ten decent games.markedkiller78 wrote:The whole topic is a bag of shit. Sven, you're a nutter!it depends if you rather want one great game or ten decent games.
There are lots of other great games too. You can get ESPrade for $300 and that's an incredible game.
Just because of Ketsui's noteriety, I don't know how far that propels it above other Cave shooters in terms of gameplay - it's a beut but there're definitely cheaper games on par with it, especially if you're a Raizing freak.

I’m also bored hence me resurrecting this useless thread that the original poster has long since forgotten about. From my reckoning you could get 7 of the pcbs below for $1000 & 3 of them are form the Top 10, as voted by the experts (not me

The suicide battery puts me off that :/markedkiller78 wrote:I stand corrected & I take my hat off to that purchaseI’ve still not got the balls to buy that.
Hm, I don't think 7 is quite feasible. 4 seems more realistic, and all it takes is one Mushi or DOJ @ $450 and there goes half yer $$$... buy both, and your third choice had better be something cheap!markedkiller78 wrote:I’m also bored hence me resurrecting this useless thread that the original poster has long since forgotten about. This is just my 2p's worth
To add my tuppence, Ketsui is good, but it is not my favourite shmup (nor even Cave shmup) - if nothing else, DDP DOJ is - IMO - well on a par with Ketsui (I've got them both). Anyway, I prefer Progear ;p

Re: Ketsui worth the price?
Ketsui was one of my first PCBs alongside Espgaluda II. From my point of view, i.e someone who doesn't own a cab, games that don't have great ports or good quality emulation are the best reason to own a supergun.markedkiller78 wrote:The whole topic is a bag of shit. All these games have good ports or are emulated fairly well, with the possible exception of Mushi:
