Imperishable Night (Touhou 08; ZUN, 2004)

Post by moozooh »

Imperishable Night is the 8th title in the Touhou timeline, and also one of the most popular games of the series. This time we have four teams each consisting of two different characters (human and youkai/phantom), all of which are playable solo as well, and all having somewhat different properties and advantages, allowing to find a perfect balance between scoring and survival for everyone.

Further info on the game and its mechanics can be found here at Touhou wiki:
http://touhouwiki.net/wiki/Imperishable_Night.

This high score thread is a successor to Danny's previous one (as of 2008-02-21). Thanks for maintaining it, Danny!

Rules:

- one credit only (the score must have 0 as its last digit);
- no frame drop rates over 5% (this is to ensure no slowdown has been used to an unfair advantage);
- full version only (use the latest patch, 1.00d; see note #2 and #4);
- replay files are required for #1 scores (see note #3).

Format to submit scores in:

Code: Select all

name - score - stage&path - character/team - framedrop%
Example:

Code: Select all

John Doe - 1,234,623,230 - 6b - Reimu & Yukari - 0.78%

Top scores:

Easy: Heartbeam — 2,831,677,280 (no-focus) — Youmu (replay).

Normal: Heartbeam — 3,271,900,810 (no-focus) — Youmu (replay).

Hard: atsumu — 4,147,152,660 — Rm & Yk (replay).

Lunatic: .ASP — 5,465,554,730 — Rm & Yk (replay).

Extra: Nereid — 2,303,936,920 — Sk & Rr (replay).

Notes:

1. I will include world records for the sake of comparison. They will not be an active part of the local scoreboard, although I will update them as well as the local scores. They can all be gotten here.

2. If you have vanilla Imperishable Night 1.00b, use this patch to update it to 1.00d. Scores with 1.00b are not accepted.
There is also an english translation patch here.

3. I require a replay for the new #1 scores just because it's very easy to save replays (laughably easy compared to setting a new record in the first place). I will not require replays for other scores, but it's good if you post them. Don't post proofpics, as they clutter the thread needlessly yet provide no advantages over a replay file.

Free Touhou replay uploaders:
http://replays.gensokyo.org/
http://www.touhoureplays.com/

4. Demo scores are not included because pretty much no-one plays demos for competition. If you want to compete, buy or lend the game, it's not hard.
Last Words are not included because they're easily maxed-out completion-wise, and no-one's gonna bother playing them for score. At least not here.

5. All boards will be limited to 20 score entries, not counting the WRs. The competition isn't very strong here, so if you're scoring lower than #20, it likely means you aren't even trying. :)

6. Character/team formatting on the board will be done identically to how the game lists it in the replay menu. Which means:
Solo characters listed by their name;
Reimu & Yukari -> Rm & Yk;
Marisa & Alice -> Ms & Al;
Sakuya & Remilia -> Sk & Rr;
Youmu & Yuyuko -> Ym & Yy.
You may submit it in whatever form you like, as long as you keep it easily parseable (so things like "border team", "ghost team" are accepted as well).

7. The game isn't freeware. Which means you'll have either to buy it, lend, or leech off the internet. Paletweb sells the game for $17.99 (the sheer volume of content packed into Imperishable Night provides a good bang for the buck here). As for leeching, search google for doujinstyle or go ask your favorite torrent trackers. (And be prosecutedt to the full extent of the jam.)

Hard:
CIV-2,894,182,400-Cb-Youmu & Yuyuko-0.864518%-Replay

About average, I guess. 3 misses, 14 bombs...some unnecessary bombing involved, Keine still is an impediment.

New Normal score: 1,720,397,480 — Cb — Rm & Yk — 0.78% (replay).
I seriously need to calm my greed down and get hit a little less in stages 4 & 5.

Heh, poor Danny. :P

Meanwhile, I tried Youmu for the first time today, and the result is… well, let's say the result isn't bad, but the playthrough is:

Easy:
moozooh — 1,863,389,480 — Cb — Youmu — 0.32% (replay).

I think I'll be taking the Easy board soon (yes zdk, we'll compete here as well, haha).

Oh, we'll see about that. I'm meh about the other games, but i will protect this one Though, only if it needs to be. I have a rather size-able amount of work to do, hence why I've been slacking at knocking your rear end off of the MoF and PCB boards. On a related note, how do you have the time to play shmups, and TAS super metroid, along with whatever else you're doing?
my run was pretty improvable, with a botched last stage and stage 4 (despite no miss no bomb). my hard mode run was terrible, that should definitely be replaced some time.
I still haven't looked at the WR's either, so I imagine there are some nice strategies that I haven't found out yet.

Well, actually, I do only one full run per day on average (2-3 on my days off). My total amount of finished (as in, complete or gameover'd) attempts on IN counting all difficulties is probably less than 20. For the record, I estimate it to be around 25-30 for MoF and 50+ for PCB. Everything else I usually restart at stage 1.

As for TASing Super Metroid, I'm pretty much slacking on that. :(

Haha, it's not that bad at higher difficulties, actually. Sakuya sucks a fat one, but Remilia is perhaps the most powerful character in the game. You should also try Youmu solo, she's damn versatile, although needs getting used to controlling her "option".

Also decided to take a shot at easy. Cleared on the third run, but I saw "last spellcard failed" like 5 damn times.

Ok, the second Easy mode playthrough with Youmu was considerably better than the first: I was about ten millions away from my previous best even before the endgame bonus, and after it, I'm at #3. Just a little more, and the top is mine, har har!

moozooh — 2,071,660,190 — Cb — Youmu — 0.15% (replay).

Took another shot at it today, not a huge improvement but it's a move up the ranks at least.

nZero - 1,443,765,170 - Cb - Marisa - 0.15%

Also I had no idea before today that the single characters and the different final routes were unlocks. All of that stuff was already there in the copy I acquired. Oh well.

Yeah, the game has a lot of unlockable content. And congrats on moving up the ladder. Marisa is a good character for Easy mode, so it makes sense to practice using her there further.

Board updated.

Just a diversion, but still moves me up a couple of places so I'll post it. Gonna use what I learned to clean up my Marisa run maybe this weekend.

Hah, Sakuya? A diversion indeed. :P

Meanwhile, KWS has the Easy mode WR now, with a 32 million gain over AM, using Youmu. The run has slight mistakes in stage 4 (midboss + 2nd stage section), and a bit of stage 5. Otherwise, it's pretty damn polished to boot, and shows excellent familiar handling.

Easy:
Cromarty - 1,725,032,900 - C - Reimu - 0.83
Normal:
Cromarty - 1,156,360,060 - C - Rm & Yk - 0.81

I don't remember which route those were, since the scores are several months old.
Reimu's name is the first listed for the border team, right? The result menu isn't translated, and the kanji in the names are not among the few that I know.

Do you at least remember what final boss you fought? I'll update the board with your scores, but I'd like you to try remembering it first.

Yes, Reimu is the red-white clothed priestess that fires homing amulets.

Btw, have you installed the translation patch?

Some new scores, nothing spectacular though :D

Easy
Shion - 1,780,606,910 - Cb - Rm & Yk - 4.36%

Hard
Shion - 2,162,707,860 - Cb - Rm & Yk - 5.34%

Lunatic
Shion - 1,683,310,920 - 6b - Rm & Yk - 5.59%

Silly enough, this score is better than my Lunatic 1CC score >_>
I guess it's because I try to bomb as little as possible. It costs me too many lives though :(

Just out of curiosity, what are the base specs of your computer? :)

AMD 3700+ processor, 2GB ram, 7900GT 256mb vid card. No, I have no idea why I'm having a 5% slowdown rate ;)
I don't notice it at all while playing though. No laggy bits, no noticeable frame drop. Could be a weird bug.

I remember that my first clear of normal was border team route A, because of how badly I did in stage 5 (so then I thought 6A would be the easier way to clear it). Character select shows that I have both routes clear, I have only two C scores for border team normal. The one I posted has a more recent date on it than the other, so it must be route B.
Character select also shows that I only have route B cleared for Reimu on easy mode, and I only have one score there, so that one has to be route B as well.

More or less. After I attempted patching the game wouldn't run, the backups weren't working, so I downloaded it again from doujinstyle rather than wherever the first came from and copied score.dat over. This one has the in-game dialogue/endings, the music room, and the spell cards translated; everything else is unchanged.
Also, I didn't think to check the character select screen to compare the names yesterday.. did that just now, easy mode was definitely as Reimu.

Just found out about this little nugget 2 weeks ago, pretty fun game.

Vorpal - 1,691,109,730 - Cb - Sk & Rr - 0.20%

I don't really understand a lot about this game though. No idea what the slow percentage is referring to, or why creepy chibi maids are casting spells at eachother, for instance ;p

slow percent is just a measure of how much lag you had during the run, higher slow percent means that the game ran slower for you.

and I think the story made more sense back when I couldn't read it.

Done; another score is off the Normal list.

Now we just need two more players to submit Easy scores, and the competition will be strengthened there as well. :)
