About Tate (warning: not serious shmup thread)

Post by chempop »

Since the majority of us still here are jokers (no offense to the Shmup God's of course) I thought I'd attempt this thread regarding Tate. Primarily I'd like to discuss non-shmupers reactions that you've witnessed when they see your TV in Tate position. I like to make up strange stories as to why my TV is on its side that has nothing to do with video games and see what kinda reaction I get. Sometimes when I have a girl over for the first time and she gives me a freaked out look, I just say "what, you never watch TV lying down?" or, "isn't that how its supposed to be?" (with an innocent look on my face). Ok, time to Tate my TV before friends arrive and see what they have to say...

Well in attempt to redeem myself, feel free to post any useful Tate info. i think a do's/don't Tate thread would be helpful to newbies. I'll start...

Don't ever use a speaker as a TV stand, the magnet will seriously ef up your TV and can permanently screw up your TV.

Do put something under the front of your TV to angle it so the top is slightly tilted back. This is surprisingly helpful, but I'm not really sure why it makes such a huge difference.

Always unplug before rotation, leave it for 5 minutes, Tate and leave again for 5 minutes before plugging it back in. Yeah I know this is common knowledge but its really important.

I seem to recall there being a pretty in-depth guide to tate on here. The big thing would appear to not be if your going to screw up the tube by flipping it but if the tv can actually support its own weight when rotated.

That one's here, as linked in the Board FAQ.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

I've been doing some video stuff lately, and have been considering making a short movie in tate format. Should be interesting.

The first time I ever tated my TV, my whole family, and friends, thought something was terribly wrong with me. But then they understood after I explained the importance of it.

I have no interesting or funny Tate stories.

The first time I rotated my TV (which was a pretty small one with very flat sides, which proved to be an advantage), I just thought "Man, that looks cool as hell".

Indeed. I just tried it some weeks ago with PS2 shmups (Ibara, Mushihime-sama, DDP DOJ), on a very small CRT TV with flat sides, too, it's very convenient.
Yoko was ruining my eyes and was barely playable, in comparison.
I think it matters less with VGA or HD compatible games.

I was over a friend's apartment, and when we tated the TV for the first time to play Raiden III, his roommate, who almost never says anything, just came out and said "You guys are MORONS." It was rather priceless.

i just set my computer up with 3 monitors so i no longer have to TATE/YOKO one monitor back and forth all the time. it's pretty sweet actually, the tated one, which is 19" in the middle, doesn't have a stand on the bottom, so there isn't much distance between them

I heard some people lay on their side with a yoko/normal telly for the tate experience, which seems even more ridiculous.

Also, my wife does film editing, and has become really interested in the idea of a Tate TV production. We of course realised it would rely on tate'ed TVs in the homes of non-shmuppers, but just the other day I saw some London fashion shop, and all their walls were covered in 50" tate'ed plasma screens, running fashion show catwalk stuff, which naturally fitted the rotated screen really well. I'd love to have done some gaming in their. Anyway - the wife does club visuals, and might be seeing if she could get a venue to tate their screens for some tate visuals...

I used to wish that would happen as a kid. Like a 90 degree gravity switch.

And then Miyamoto made it into a game! Obviously I came up with the idea and he stole it!

My wife says, "That's our only TV and it came from WalMart so it will probably break if you do that."

First time I rotated the TV was with Galactic Attack on Saturn. Being completely ignorant, I didn't allow the TV time to adjust to the new position and when I switched it on, everything was sort of tinted green. Also being an idiot, I figured it was some "cool" effect for the game's Arcade mode and proceeded to play it for several hours and when I turned the TV back, the color was screwed up for awhile and for years after would randomly go really bright or really dim for a few seconds at a time.

Someone - I think it was my brother - saw one of our TVs rotated once and also thought we (my gf and I) were really lazy or something and played while lying on the floor. I've found it very difficult to explain the purpose of tate w/out a visual demonstration.

I just say "That's the way arcade screens are" even though it's a ridiculous over-simplification. Prevents too many questions though.

My setup is kind of funny because there is a 29" television tated and on a table next to a 50" DLP HDTV. I think the combination of a huge widescreen TV with the tated TV is enough to overwhelm people so that they don't even ask. Sometimes there is an arcade controller and chair in front of the TV and then I just explain that it's my arcade cabinet.

The tated Egret in my living room kinda negates any shock value from the guests here. They see that and pretty much know how we roll
